How do platforms like YouTube keep us engaged and always make us want to spend more time on them? At flowstate.cc, we think it’s not just about willpower or discipline—these platforms are a masterclass in cognitive and behavioral science. From conversations with our users and our internal research, we identified four key reasons (not necessarily MECE) that make us stay on for “just one more video”
⚡ Instant gratification (the dopamine trap):
Serendipitous discovery. Open YouTube → landing page has all sorts of exciting new content YouTube knows you like → forget your goal, this is so much fun!
Intermittent reinforcement. Open a short → it’s over in a blink, scroll to another? → keep going till you land on one you love → you want that “aha!” moment again! Scroll for more
Visual gratification. A color bomb with attractive thumbnails everywhere! This is stimulating - you want to keep it going for longer
💭 Escapism:
Emotional regulation. Not feeling great → open YouTube, escape those feelings, jump into another realm, eventually hope to feel better → that eventuality keeps getting longer & longer each time!
Procrastination. Got an uninteresting task, can’t seem to get started on it → open YouTube, watch unrelated videos → feel a temporary sense of progress completely tangential to the task at hand
❤️ Social connection and belonging:
Community engagement. A ready and global audience to discuss topics close to your heart → interact real-time via comments and live chats
Shared experiences. Subscribe to and follow successful creators that resonate with your personal beliefs / interests → shared memes, laughter, fights and more - a parasocial experience!
🤔 Curiosity and exploration:
Cognitive engagement. Wildlife, forgotten architectural marvels, science behind everyday life, tutorials for almost anything - you name it, YouTube’s got it. And it’s all “useful” in some sense → so many choices every step of the way → decision fatigue! → let YouTube decide your watch trajectory!
Endless content flow. You stop when you’re bored. Right? Well, each new video is just as engaging as the previous → picture an ocean of content with a boat that won’t capsize (the recommendation system)—keeping you afloat and moving indefinitely!
💡 Why Flowstate?
Are these factors all bad all the time? Not at all! Everyone has their sweet spot on YouTube, but no tool helps set that balance. That’s why the YouTube experience feels both rewarding and draining.
With our browser extension for YouTube (link in comments below), we’re trying to reimagine it, aiming for a user-focused experience that values utility over engagement. We’re not at the Holy Grail yet, but you’re going to help us get there, right? Thanks for reading!
