What does it take to go public? Is there a more relevant venture question in 2025? We're in the longest IPO drought, with growing enthusiasm that the markets are once again available. I'm always reluctant to forecast capital markets, but I will observe when I entered venture 20 years ago you had to have $50M of revenue which slowly grew to a $100M hurdle. During the 2019 through 2021 boom that grew to +$200M. ***The median IPO in 2025 has had +$900M in revenue*** If you want to throw a wet towel on the IPO bulls, that right there is the fact. Further, these companies are still growing at a staggering +30% at their scale. That's no easy feat, and goes to show the incredible caliber of companies we've seen go public so far this year. My guess is we'll see some companies in the $400M and $500M range try the markets next year, and I'm very curious to see their success. But the days of $100M companies going public feel like a memory, particularly when the late stage private markets continue to be on fire. ***This post is already too long, but I also noticed that these companies took 12 years to go from Series A to IPO*** Most venture funds run 10 year funds with 2 year extensions. If you invest in a Series A in the third year of deployment, and are beholden to a lock-up, this suggests you won't be able to distribute liquidity until year 15 for your biggest winners. Clearly that's not sustainable, and something that is the topic of all GP <> LP conversations right now. And for those entrepreneurs in year 7 or year 8 with IPO dreams, you're not behind.

🔥🚪👀 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗗𝗥𝗢𝗣 𝗜𝗡𝗦, weekly profiles of cracked teams | Ep 11: Hebbia In investing and banking, perhaps the biggest bottleneck is the amount of cognitive labor that midlevel and senior professionals can process. For decades, the solution to this problem has been “bodies” — large classes of analysts and associates who sift through, summarize, and distill large quantities of information for their more senior colleagues. But AI is now proving capable of a lot of that same sifting, summarization, and distillation — and Hebbia, founded by George Sivulka, is the leading provider of such AI to financial firms. ||FAST FACTS|| - HQ in NYC - $160M raised to date, from firms including a16z (Alex Immerman) and Index (Mike Volpi, prior to launching Hanabi Capital) - Founded in 2020 ||PRODUCT|| Hebbia's AI application enables knowledge workers (primarily in Finance) to query and synthesize information across massive unstructured datasets (think PDFs, contracts, filings, decks) with ease. Its platform replaces manual review and search by decomposing complex questions into model-routed subtasks and returning traceable answers with citations. The company’s technical edge is in retrieval and decomposition — a proprietary alternative to standard RAG that delivers materially higher accuracy on multi-document reasoning. --- #startups #venturecapital #AI #hiring #officedropins

Launched in May, a feature on Max's Office Drop-Ins series has quickly become a hot ticket for AI founders eager to showcase their company culture and attract top talent in an overheated, undersupplied market. He’s dropped in on some of the most distinctive teams in the ecosystem - from Rilla (Sebastian) to Factory (Matan), with stops at Bland (Isaiah), Outtake (Alex), and Crosby (Ryan). What is consistent is the excitement of each founder to show off 1) what makes their team 'greater than the sum of its parts' and 2) what makes the problem they’re tackling a massive opportunity. Follow Max for more Office Drop-Ins and a peek at what it feels like to build inside the fastest-growing startups.

Unlike SaaS, where unit economics tend to be predictable, AI startups deal with cost structures that can swing wildly. Compute bills can spike 10x during usage surges. Model upgrades might require repricing. Inference costs may jump 500% between different request types, making budgeting a moving target. Customers, meanwhile, often struggle to measure the ROI of AI features, especially generative ones. At our last GTM Summit, Peter Giordano addressed these questions and shared a practical decision tree for founders. This cheat sheet helps you align pricing with customer value, design hybrid models that scale as your business grows, and set guardrails to protect margins 👇
