This month, I traveled to northern Finland 🇫🇮 and Norway 🇳🇴 to see the Northern Lights. You know how most people say they went and never saw them? Well, we saw them over 20 times—and six of those were mind-blowing displays that looked even better IRL than on camera. That probably sounds like we had insanely good luck. And yes, luck played a part (plus the fact that Aurora activity is particularly strong this season). But luck wasn’t the main factor. If you ask Aurora hunters or anyone who lives in the Arctic Circle, they’ll tell you that on a clear night this time of year, you’re almost guaranteed to see the lights. But MANY tourists don’t. If you want a great show, you have to be dedicated and prepared. And believe me, I wasn’t going to travel halfway across the world to one of the coldest places on earth (negative degrees FAHRENHEIT) and NOT see some mind-blowing Auroras. My approach to Aurora hunting was serious—almost militant. (My travel companions definitely made fun of me.) But it paid off big time. Here's how I managed it and what hunting the Northern Lights taught me about B2B SaaS marketing... 😆

Doing something different for this time of year… Instead of offering discounts, I’m going to be raising my agency rates for certain services. (And adding new packages.) After having conversations with partners and contractors and evaluating the market, I realized that there are certain things I can’t offer at their current rates. To be more sustainable in 2025 and continue offering boutique, high-touch services, I’m going to have to make some pricing tweaks. I will honor current pricing associated with promos through the end of the year (such as my RubyConf promos— https://seafoam.media/ruby) But as of next week, you’ll notice changes on my general services page. Including some exciting new things! If you’ve been wanting to work together and want to get in at my current rates, shoot me a message and I’m happy to have a conversation about what we can make work. Note: My minimum for fractional services will be staying the same for now and I have space for two more fractional clients.

Last month we hosted Sea Foam Media’s FIRST event — an #SFTechWeek boat happy hour, where we sailed around the Bay for 4 hours! We lucked out with a perfect SF evening and sunset 🌅 and enjoyed drinks, food, music, and networking. These are some photos from our incredible photographer Erick Davidson! We have lots more and will share with attendees in a Google drive link via email. Thanks so much to everyone for coming out, we hope you had a great time! 🥂 TECH WEEK by a16z Rhiannon Payne Justin Bowen James Payne Lucy Bedewi Qasim Asad Salam Jung Moon Siri Srinivas Jacob Straube🍓 Oscar Wu Matthew Kael Swanson Rhianon Anderson Dexus Almonte Thu Nguyen Caio Pizzol Ben Sheldon Marco Roth Jonah Lynch MaryAlice Turletes Tytus S. Well… It’s officially been a year since I quit my marketing job at a hyper-growth startup. I gave up a very comfortable salary and benefits in a fully remote role and took a leap of faith with the goal of restarting my marketing agency Sea Foam Media and working for myself again. So, how’s it been going? 🤔 Even though the first half of this year was HARD and full of uncertainty (my confidence took a huge hit, I struggled with my feelings of value on a personal level, and kept second-guessing my decision) I am so glad I did it and ultimately have zero regrets. No, I haven’t replaced the monetary value of my old salary and benefits (YET). But I’m confident I’ll get there next year. What’s more important is that it just feels so GOOD to be selective about the people I work with and prioritize taking on clients who I genuinely LOVE collaborating with. Plus, I get to do work that’s almost always fresh, interesting, and engaging. AND my clients hire me because they respect my expertise and genuinely value my perspective. They WANT me to have a strong POV on how to do their marketing and give me a lot of autonomy. And beyond that, I no longer have the feelings of stress and anxiety that come from being a cog in a giant corporate startup machine. I don’t feel like I’m under anyone’s thumb. I get to make the rules and feel empowered to build a career that I actually enjoy. Which is so motivating, and in turn, allows me to do my best work. I also don’t have to stress about things like layoffs anymore — my career and livelihood is fully in my control. When I look back on my career as a whole, I’ve been able to reinvent it (and myself) so many times, always for the better. I’ve lived so many different professional lives. And letting go of things that weren’t working for me has always led to something bigger and better. And the hard truth of it is — once something stops working for you, it’s not going to go back to the way it was before. Convincing yourself that it will is just delaying the inevitable and wasting time you could be spending on figuring out the next thing. But I’m still really grateful for the experience I had working for a larger company. Being part of hyper-growth forces you to level up your skills and exposes you to what “great” looks like. The expectations are on the moon and you have to be ON POINT to help get there. Even the hard times really define you and show you what you’re made of. It helped me become a better marketer and leader in so many ways, and I wouldn’t be capable of everything I’m doing today without those experiences. I also got to learn from some incredibly talented people, which is not something you often get when working for yourself. So, what’s next? 🌊 I relaunched Sea Foam Media in August and I’m excited to continue scaling it next year! My focus is building my fractional business with clients in HR tech, dev tools, OSS, and AI. If you’re interested in working together, please shoot me a message. ☺️
