About us

Whole Foods was founded in 1980 on the belief that where food comes from, and how it’s grown, matters. It meant creating quality standards, working with suppliers who achieve them, and sharing that information with our customers. And it radically changed the way people understood and shopped for food. The result has been the highest quality natural and organic products, an unmatched experience in more than 500+ stores, with a passionate team of over 90,000 team members, 5 percent of our total net profits given back to our communities each year, and millions of customers who put their trust in us every day.

  • Representing a variety of roles and backgrounds from our stores in Washington, D.C., 23 Team Members came together for a Field Day full of learning and community building, hosted by our very own Nicole Davia: "Our Field Days embody the heart of our mission. They're not just outings: They're meaningful experiences that connect our Team Members with our entire supply chain ecosystem. From understanding our vital partnerships with suppliers to witnessing how products reach our shelves and how unsold items benefit our community, it's a powerful, full-circle journey. I'm incredibly proud of how our team engaged, inquired and rolled up their sleeves to make a tangible difference." Team Members spent the day: 💚 Connecting with the community and packing meals with our friends at Francis on the Hill, an affiliate of Following Francis 🎣 Visiting with the father-son duo at Ivy City Smokehouse, Inc, a leader in the movement toward sustainable fisheries (and home of delicious smoked salmon) 🤝 Meeting representatives from several local suppliers that have benefited from Union Kitchen, a local incubator and accelerator committed to supporting local brands “This hands-on involvement in our community truly exemplifies our purpose and values in action. What a great day. My cup is full.” — Nicole Davia, Senior Vice President of Northeast Operations #FieldDay #NourishPurpose #NourishConnection #TeamWFM

When we ask our Team Members what they love most about working at Whole Foods Market, our Quality Standards are a consistent factor. We make these commitments because we believe people deserve something better: high-quality, delicious food that nourishes people and the planet. As our CEO Jason said, this isn't a checkbox; it's who we are. #TeamWFM

Vice President, Amazon Worldwide Grocery Stores, and CEO, Whole Foods Market

Since opening our first store 45 years ago, Whole Foods Market has been the leader for standards across the industry. We’ve continued to elevate our Quality Standards, raising the bar for what it means to be on our shelves. In 2017 when we joined Amazon, we banned around 80 food ingredients. Today, our list has expanded to more than 300 banned food ingredients. We’ve also introduced 10 new Quality Standards and commitments in that time period, including: 1. Animal Welfare Standards for Laying Hens  2. Canned Tuna Standards  3. Regenerative Agriculture Claims Policy  4. Sourcing Standards for Canned Seafood  5. Pollinator Health Policy for Fresh Produce & Floral  6. Seafood Code of Conduct  7. Quality Standards for Seasonings  8. Quality Standards for Standalone Oils  9. Expanded Animal Welfare Policy to include our entire Meat Department  10. Exclusive Brand Coffee and Tea Commitments Whole Foods Market also remains the only certified organic national retailer, and we’ve grown our leadership in that space with organic product sales up more than 60% compared to 2019. A higher percentage of our total sales now come from organic items than ever before. In addition to organic, we’re proud to offer 300+ certified regenerative products and more than 400 additional items with vetted regenerative claims. Our Exclusive Brands portfolio has grown 50% since 2019 and now includes nearly 2,000 organic SKUs, including the first Regenerative Organic Certified private label products — from dried mango and lentils to coffee and almond flour.  Our Quality Standards aren’t just a checkbox. They are the foundation of our brand and what set us apart—it’s  who we are.

"My career path with Whole Foods Market began in May 2018. I was first drawn to join when I was a third-party vendor and saw the sincere environment that was cultivated for guests and workers alike. One day, something magical happened: The Store Team Leader and both Associate Store Team Leaders approached me and expressed that they would love for me to join the Pacific Coast Highway Whole Foods team. I was later hired to work in the Grocery department and enjoyed every second of it. Seven years later, I excelled in my role as the Grocery Team Trainer and am now the Store Trainer. In 2022, I had the pleasure of being selected to represent California at the Culture Champions Summit in Austin, Texas. As a Culture Champion Ambassador, this was such a rewarding experience for me — meeting so many like-minded individuals from around the world with the same goals, vision and aspirations. It was so enlightening, and in that moment I realized I was where I needed and wanted to be. One of my mottos as a leader is that no one is better than anyone else, no matter what titles we hold. We all do the same thing and that's taking care of our customers and one another. Gaining trust and respect can go a long way in building long-lasting relationships, so as Store Trainer, I ensure I'm creating welcoming, safe and supportive environments so my Team Members know they have someone actively championing their success. I am deeply passionate about what I do and how I serve and fulfill my purpose every day. At Whole Foods, I feel valued and part of a team that truly cares about people and the planet as much as I do. The supportive culture makes it easy and a joy to come to work and grow. It's a proud feeling, knowing the work I do contributes to healthier communities and sustainable choices." - S. "Hispanics are the biggest minority in the United States, and we will continue to grow. And I think that power is really wonderful to see. And incorporating our culture into the mainstream is something that I’m just so proud of.” - Stefanie Garcia Turner, CEO and Founder, TUYYO 💚 🔗 You can checkout the #WholeStory on TUYYO here: https://lnkd.in/gRp837w5 #WholeStory #NourishPurpose #TeamWFM

  • "I began my career at Whole Foods Market in 1996, joining the Produce department at the Arlington, VA, store straight out of high school. Starting as an evening Team Member in our Produce department, I was promoted to Night Supervisor within six months. The following year, I became the Associate Team Leader in Produce and later Team Leader at our Annandale store (which is now known as the Old Town store in Alexandria, VA). Over the next 16 years, I served as Team Leader at the Tyson, Georgetown (Glover Park), and P Street locations. In 2012, I completed the Career Development Associate Store Team Leader program, which led to my role as Store Team Leader for multiple locations throughout the DMV metro area. The culture at Whole Foods is the major reason I've stayed, and I think a lot of that culture stems from what we stand for and our Core Values — specifically our commitment To Promote Team Member Growth and Happiness. I've done my best to champion this principle because I have seen what happens when people feel valued, supported and encouraged to grow: They not only perform better, but also bring their best selves to the team. Creating an environment where others can thrive gives me purpose and remains my motivation even after nearly three decades with Whole Foods. I'm very excited to be opening the first Daily Shop in the Virginia region. This new concept store is great for our neighborhood, providing our community with greater access to the same high-quality offerings they expect from us, but in an enhanced, convenient shopping experience. I am honored to not only cultivate this innovative environment here in Arlington, but also to hire individuals who are eager to be a part of this important new journey alongside me. Be sure to stop in and see us when we open!" - Jose Gomez, Store Team Leader #NSO #NourishPeople #NourishWellbeing #TeamWFM

What caught my attention about Stefanie Garcia Turner's story wasn't just her transition from Team Member to founder – it was how she channeled her 15+ years of experience at Whole Foods Market into creating something truly meaningful with her company TUYYO. From starting in our Florida stores to becoming a Local Forager in the Midwest, Stefanie's journey exemplifies how industry expertise can fuel innovation. Tuyyo represents more than just a brand; it's a testament to making nostalgic beverages accessible without artificial ingredients. In our conversation for Beyond the Board, Stefanie shares how her time as a Local Forager shaped her understanding of what it takes to go from selecting products for our shelves to creating them. This episode reminds me why I'm passionate about the grocery industry--it's filled with people like Stefanie who are committed to both quality and cultural authenticity. “In the past decade, there’ s been a genuine push from the younger generations who are now in their twenties, thirties, wanting to learn more about their Korean heritage. And, I think wanting to pay homage to what’s actually Korean. And a lot of us who care a lot more about authentic products are saying ‘Let’s brew makgeolli the correct way.'” - Carol Pak, Founder and CEO at Sool 💚💚💚 Today is the start of Chuseok (추석), one of Korea’s biggest holidays, often called the “Korean Thanksgiving.” This festival brings families together to honor their ancestors, celebrate the autumn harvest and share traditional, delicious meals that include freshly made "songpyeon" (half-moon rice cakes), and "makgeolli", Korea’s oldest alcoholic beverage made with rice. On a trip to Korea in 2017, Carol Pak re-discovered makgeolli and the hundreds of its dedicated breweries but was disappointed by the few options available in the US. So, she embarked on a journey to globalize Korean alcohol in an accessible and inclusive way — and Màkku was born. *celebrate responsibly 🍶 #WholeStory #TeamWFM

"To me being a Culture Champion means being an authentic representation of what Whole Foods Market is at its core. We are knowledgeable, driven and passionate. We don’t do things the easy way, we do them the right way because that’s the way to get the best results. Being a culture champion means answering the questions our communities have about what we do, in and out of the store. Why do we aim to recycle? Why do we support gardens in local schools? What does that have to do with selling groceries? We are armed with a layer of information to be able to share the magic that is this company with everyone. Personally, going through the Culture Champion program has helped me fall in love all over again with our mission. Good food, healthy food, safe food, is not a privilege for a select few, it should be available to everyone. We work hard every day to make sure everyone can find something in our stores to nourish and delight. The common thread of conversation since I got back from being In the Field in Iceland has been sharing the realization that there are so many moving parts that go into what we stock every day. Not only are small communities thousands of miles away involved with the making of our products, but every step along the way was planned and prepared for. The level of care we witnessed was astounding. New Chapter, Inc., for example, formulates their products for maximum effectiveness by taking into account if a nutrient in it needs to be fermented or what the best form of a nutrient is for a given product. Blaine Streisand, their CEO, explained the 'why' behind the 'what' with such dedication, really showing how this care is taken from the top down. Every vendor, every partner, every person we talked to on the trip had the same mindset: 'Make the best product, even if it makes the process harder, longer, or more involved, because the best products are made the right way. Not by short cuts.' Seeing the ripples of every choice behind every product has given me a new appreciation for the hard work done by our teams and the communities and brands behind the products we sell. We’re part of a web of people committed to nourishing the world. That’s a beautiful thing to witness and I feel blessed to be a part of it." - Cheryl Bauer, Sanitation Team Member #Iceland #InTheFieldWFM #TeamWFM

  • "The elementary school I attended is about a mile away from the flagship Whole Foods Market Lamar store here in Austin, TX. They would give Whole Foods cookie vouchers for good attendance (and I was a model student). Back then, Whole Foods shared a floor with BookPeople across the street and this little section of Austin became a very local and amicable way to spend an afternoon. Since my last free Gingerbread Man, I launched a startup that was acquired in 2015, worked briefly as a federal agent, and spent seven years in hedge fund and private equity finance. I was selected and sponsored by MLB to participate in their SABRmetrics conference based on my work in player valuations, but after that ended, I decided I was ready for something new. So, when an opening at Whole Foods on the Indirect Procurement team opened up, I welcomed the opportunity. Joining this team has been a riveting experience: I'm getting to create purchasing models and enhance data structures all alongside a supportive, creative and energetic group of Team Members. During my lunch break, I like to grab my guitar, which commutes with me to work, and head over to our office's patio that's tucked away from downtown Austin, surrounded by shade and greenery. Neither of my parents play instruments, but my grandfather is in the Tejano Music Hall of Fame, so I was surrounded by music from an early age. As a born and raised Austinite, there was always lots of access to local musicians: I grew up with Max Frost, was taught to drum by Ernie Durawa of the Texas Tornados and was introduced to Gary Clark Jr. as a teenager. I started off drumming but picked up guitar when my twin brother wanted to trade instruments. Playing music during the middle of the day is cathartic and gives me something different to focus on. The guitar I carry around the office is oddly shaped and signed by a well-known Texan, so it’s served as a fun conversation starter with my new coworkers." If you find yourself by the flagship store midday on Fridays and hear harmonious guitar riffs, that's just one of the ways we say 'hello' in Austin." - Mark Escamilla, Indirect Procurement Financial Analyst #NourishPeople #NourishWellbeing #TeamWFM
