Working with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life.

About us

We are the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. For more than a century, NIST has helped to keep U.S. technology at the leading edge. Our measurements support the smallest of technologies to the largest and most complex of human-made creations. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. • 🚨 NIST is #hiring a Materials Research Engineer! 🚨 Join NIST's Materials Measurement Science Division and play a pivotal role in advancing XRD science! We're seeking experts to enhance and innovate measurement capabilities, develop and certify SRMs, and be a part of impactful collaborations with the scientific community. Duties: At the ZP-III level, you will: - Maintain and operate the existing suite of custom XRD instruments and design new components as needed. This may include hardware such as precision mechanical components and diffraction optics, as well as software tools for data acquisition and analysis. - Extend and develop advanced mathematical models of XRD processes. This includes dynamic and kinematic X-ray scattering theory, Monte-Carlo simulations, and the Fundamental Parameters Approach (the primary certification method for our powder diffraction SRMs). - Provide support as needed for the certification and utilization of the existing suite of SRMs as well as the development of new standards. - Effectively communicate results through publications and presentations at national and international conferences. At the ZP-IV level, you will: - Lead efforts related to improving in-house XRD measurement capabilities. - Take on additional responsibilities related to SRM development, including engagement with the XRD community to identify future needs, evaluation of candidate reference materials potentially through the release of research grade test materials (RGTMs), and providing additional support for the existing suite of products. - Build and maintain collaborations related to XRD measurement capabilities both within and outside of NIST. - Recruit and mentor postdocs and students as appropriate. • Why is NIST a great place to work? One of the great things about working on a NIST campus is the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports and physical activities — from low-key lunchtime walks on all three campuses, to yoga and dance classes in Boulder, to competitive but friendly soccer, ultimate frisbee and volleyball games in Gaithersburg. Taking a break to play a sport, join a walk, or participate in a class could be just what you need to have a satisfying, healthy workday and connect with new colleagues. NIST's Standards Employees Benefit Association (SEBA) sponsors and has supported a number of activities on our campuses. SEBA is a volunteer organization of NIST employees dedicated to providing social, recreational, and wellness benefits to its members and others who have a close association with NIST.  Aside from these activities, SEBA also manages our campus fitness centers. These are available to all NIST employees, and can be utilized at any point during the day. See below for a list of activities that NISTers engage in: - Walking - Salsa Dance - Slow Flow Yoga - Basketball - Bowling - Gardening - Golf Association - Kickball - Knitting, Crocheting, Spinning, Cross-stitching - Ski Club - Softball League - Soccer - Tennis - Ultimate Frisbee - Volleyball
