Problem Statement
Currently, GitLab's Rich Text Editor (RTE) lacks a full-screen editing mode, which limits users' ability to focus on content creation when working with longer documents or complex formatting. Users must work within the constrained space of the standard editor interface, which can be challenging for extensive content editing tasks. This is particularily a problem when it comes to the Wiki.
Note that full-screen editing is available in the Plain Text Editor (PTE), however, the PTE requires knowledge of Markdown which is a barrier to non-technical users contributing.
Proposed Solution
Add a full-screen editing mode for the Rich Text Editor that provides:
- Distraction-free environment: Hide navigation bars, sidebars, and other UI elements to maximize content focus
- Seamless toggle: Easy entry/exit mechanism (e.g., button, keyboard shortcut like F11 or Esc)
- Preserved functionality: All RTE features remain accessible in full-screen mode
User Benefits (Wiki-Specific)
- Documentation writing: Wiki pages often contain extensive documentation that benefits from a distraction-free writing environment with full visibility of content structure
- Long-form content creation: Technical guides, API documentation, and tutorials require sustained focus that full-screen editing facilitates
- Content organization: Better overview of headings, sections, and hierarchical content structure when editing comprehensive wiki pages
- Knowledge transfer: Easier creation of detailed onboarding documentation, process guides, and institutional knowledge without UI distractions
- Template usage: Improved experience when working with wiki page templates that may have complex formatting requirements
- Review and revision: Enhanced readability during content review cycles, making it easier to spot formatting issues and content gaps
