Peter, what does "timezone" look like on your platform? I noticed in
dt_time.c (a new file), in dt_time_edit_window(), it refers to "timezone"
as extern long, but on all my platforms (FreeBSD, BSD/OS), it's actually
"char * timezone(int zone, int dst)".
Here's the man page:
NAME
timezone - return the timezone abbreviation
LIBRARY
Standard C Library (libc, -lc)
SYNOPSIS
char *
timezone(int zone, int dst);
DESCRIPTION
This interface is for compatibility only; it is impossible to reliably
map timezone's arguments to a time zone abbreviation. See ctime(3).
The timezone() function returns a pointer to a time zone abbreviation for
the specified zone and dst values. Zone is the number of minutes west of
GMT and dst is non-zero if daylight savings time is in effect.
SEE ALSO
ctime(3)
HISTORY
A timezone() function appeared in Version 7 AT&T UNIX.

This is a tough request ;-), I'll do my best (just looking up the Changelog..): (I probably should have used the following as the Changelog for the beta1 distribution...) User visible changes: * There is a popup menu when right-clicking on an attribute label (except for "dn" and "objectClass". It allows to view schema information and it allows to change how the attribute should be presented visually (the "display type", in lack of a better name) * Added a new display type for the generalizedTime LDAP syntax. It allows to choose the day using a calendar. Very convenient if one has to enter such timestamps. Actually, this syntax isn't used very often, in my stock openldap servers this syntax only gets used for the birthDay attribute of class "personalInformation". I use this syntax in my own objectClasses though (eg. implementing LDAP based vacation e-mail replies). * When turing on "show referrals" in the serer preferences the "ref" attribute is shown. This is currently mainly useful to get an impression of how references ought to work, this feature will probably change in the future. * Password get stored encoded (NOT encrypted) in the configuration file. This is just to hide clear-text passwords from the occasional view others may glimpse if you open the .gq file in a text editor (even if there is no reason to do so) * Due to password encoding the cofngiuration file syntax was changed in a backwards-incompatible way!! gq asks if it should upgrade the configuration upon start and refuses to change the configuration later on if one does not upgrade. * A new entry in the popup menu of a search result (in a search tab) allows to find the object in a browser window. This allows to enter objects into the browse tree that might not be found otherwise, eg. because of a sizelimit. From that entry, the tree below it can be browsed. * The base DN combobox in search tabs can be changed now. This is good for searches where one needs a different base. See http://www.ldap.research.netsol.com/ldapsearch.html where this can be useful. * Japanese L10N, for those who need it, better support for languages having different needs for embedding numbers in messages than english/german. * LDAP URI support instead of hostname + port, this also allows to used ldaps:// URIs (that is LDAP over SSL, which is different to STARTTLS) * The "Add as new" button in the browser * Allow for the use of the "extensibleObject" class by allowing to add attributes to such an object. * Allow to hide empty attributes from the browser. * "Beautified" some dialogs * Added tooltips Not directly visible changes: * Bugfixes (some of them were serious, avoid a lot of core-dumping) * Improvements in LDAP error handling * gq takes a command-line option "-d" if built with debug support: -d 1 shows error numbers in error messages. -d 4 constantly displays memory usage on standard out (better if it is a tty, actually) > > What I tested so far: > - the hide/show empty attributes button works fine without problems. > - the add as new feature works fine without problems. > > I really have no idea what to do with the "Adds an attribute to an object > of class 'extensibleObject' button. Hmm, seems like I have to look that > up in RFC 2252;) Seem so ;-) Well, the 'extensibleObject' is about allowing to add attributes to objects that are not named in any of the object's objectclasses. I sometimes use this to add an eg. "description" attribute to an object that does not have this attribute already due to its objectclasses. An alternative would be to add an objectclass that has this attribute, but usually you get a lot of other possible attributes with it as well... It might not be good style, but.... > I was able to make an RPM on SuSE 8.0, I just had to remove "?download" > from the following line of gq.spec: > Source: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gqclient/gq-%{version}.tar.gz?download > > May be other RPM versions (RedHat uses RPM 4.x afaik), don't have a problem > with that? Sorry, unfortunately there is no such documentation. As many open source
project gq is plagued by its almost complete lack of documentation.

This is how it works currently:
red ... The attribute was not found to be part of any objectclass of
the entry. Hidden, directory specific attributes fall into this
category. This is also true for attributes added to an object
of class "extensibleObject" (which allows to use any attribute)
when such an object is retrieved from the LDAP server. Note that
the first time you add an attribute to an "extensibleObject" it
gets purple instead.
orange ... The attribute belonged to an objectClass that has been deleted
in the browser. This attribute will be deleted on the server
when you apply the changes.
blue ... The attribute is a required attribute of at least one named
objectclass (denoted as a MUST attribute in the schema
definition). The DN and the "objectClass" attribute are
required implicitly.
black ... An allowed attribute (according to the schema). (denoted as a
MAY attribute in the schema definition)
purple ... The attribute has just been added using the top right icon in
the browser. This only works if the object is of class
"extensibleObject". If you apply such an attribute and then
refresh the browser, the label turns red.

Hello out there, Though it is a great situation, it feels strange that I haven't received a single bug report and/or comment regarding 0.7.0beta1! This allows for a couple of explanations: ;-) 1a) It is bugfree 1b) It is perfect 2) There are bugs, but they haven't be reported. 3) Nobody tried it. 4) It is a lousy version nobody even cares to try. As causes 2-4 are very unlikely, it must be 1a and 1b!! ;-) I am happy... To be honest: I would like to set a date to release 0.7.0 final, but I would like to have some comments on the first beta: Are there bugs (either old and/or new)? Are the new features OK wrt usability? Are there open issues I simply forgot to fix/implement? Any feedback is welcome. But as I said: The situation as-is is great. If there really are no issue, there will be no need to have a second beta and I can go straight to the final version. peter |

Yes, this is possible in 0.7.0beta1 (the current beta release). Just use an ldaps URI instead of the hostname in the server settings dialog. The port setting then becomes irrelevant (and gets greyed out). Eg. use: ldaps://my.ldap.server:456/ for an LDAP-over-SSL Server listening on port 456. peter |

Subject: [Gqclient-discuss] GQ Coredumps
Hello,
I'm using gq-0.6.0. When I connect to iplanet 4.16 Directory server
and do a search using filter (uniquemember=cn=Joe User,ou=...), gq
does a coredump everytime. It does this regardless of who I bind as,
normal user or Directory Manager. Any ideas ??????????

</blockquote>
<pre wrap=""><!---->
Some questions:
* Does this happen with other server-types as well?
(if not, do you know of any publically accessible server where I could
reproduce this as well?)
* can you mail me a backtrace of this coredump? This probably requires to
have a self-compiled gq with debugging information included.
* Does it happen with the all-new, all-dangerous 0.7.0beta1 as well?

Unfortunately I do not know of any document that really does. I am painfully aware of the complete lack of documentation of gq in its current state, but I do not have the time to produce one myself. AND: As it always is the case with open-source projects, gq itself is a moving target to describe (And I really try to move it). So sorry to the original poster: There seems to be no reference to gq... at least there is none "officially". Having said the above, I should probably start a list of gq-resources available somewhere below www.biot.com/gq/... Better yet: somebody else would take care of such a list.... (hint :-) ) peter |

Sir, I am a beginner in working with LDAP. I have installed Red Hat Linux 7.1 and openldap-stable(2.0.25) on the linux machine. I have also installed gq-0.6.0 . I have searched in the internet for some manual/help regarding how to operate the tool, but have found none. Can you suggest me where I can find the same if its available. Regards, Shrabs __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo! http://sbc.yahoo.com |

This probably requires to have a self-compiled gq with debugging information included. * Does it happen with the all-new, all-dangerous 0.7.0beta1 as well? peter |

Hello, I'm using gq-0.6.0. When I connect to iplanet 4.16 Directory server and do a search using filter (uniquemember=cn=Joe User,ou=...), gq does a coredump everytime. It does this regardless of who I bind as, normal user or Directory Manager. Any ideas ?????????? /RS |

Dear gq users, I just released a beta version of the upcoming gq version 0.7.0. 0.7.0 will be an intermediate release on the way to version 1.0. This release introduces some new features, some of which are rather obscure, but of great use in certain situations. Please test it, beat it and report any problems :-) Also note that this is bleeding edge technology... For a list of changes see the file ChangeLog in the source distribution or at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gqclient/gq/ChangeLog?rev=1.35&only_with_tag=gq_0_7_0beta1&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup IMPORTANT NOTE: The configuration file syntax has changed between 0.6.0 and 0.7.0 in a backwardly incompatible way. You should backup your old configuration, in case you want/need to go back to a version earlier than 0.7.0!! peter |

That are really very nice features, respect!

Did you try out that new toggle button in the upper right corner of the object browser? It hides/shows empty attributes. Also some bugfixes went into it and it is very simple to create objects "similar" to existing ones: Just go to an object, change its DN and hit "Add as new". Makes life a lot easier around here. peter |

Hi Stephan, Could you try the attached patch? It is a really stupid patch, actually, as it effectively only reverses[1] the order we ask for all user attributes and all operational attributes... Yes this obviously _does_ make a difference with Novells implementation... I would ask other people to test the current CVS version against other server implementations, as this is actually an OpenLDAP extension... didn't think of this when I played around with it. peter [1] It also uses symbolic names now, but this is only a cosmetic change. Something happened between July 7th and Aug 1st, it seems to be related to schema retrieval... BTW: 0.6.0 also works flawlessly for me. peter |
