The description in the deb package doesn't follow the conventions. This leads to the bug described here: http://thepcspy.com/read/fixing-dpkg-status-corruption/
I fixed the bug on my system by adding dots (.) in the blank lines of the description in the /var/lib/dpkg/status file.
