Version 1.50 not installing properly

After getting version 1.50 from Sourceforge, getting
the missing *.in files from CVS, resolved the
problems with configure, I got to the stage where I
had to make the files.

The INSTALL-UNIX file made me think that I would
be asked a few questions and that files would be
installed in the right places.
Nope, neither make or make install asked me
anything and as a result, nothing is working
properly. There is no .emacs-records to be found, no
line was added in the .emacs, recordsadmin refuses
to do anything, the records directory is installed in
the bin directory... :-(

I then tried to get everything from CVS directly and
start from there.
But nothing worked at all there. Autoconf not
working (sorted by using aclocal), missing file
install-sh (sorted by copying it from the previous
attempt). But here again, no question asked and no
tailored installation...

Any help would be welcome
