Add tablets and laptops to your Google Fi plan

Important: Google Fi supports data-only eSIM for tablets and laptops.

To use your cellular-enabled tablet, laptop, or other compatible device with a data-only SIM at no extra charge:

  1. Sign up for Google Fi.
  2. Activate your phone.

You can use data-only SIMs with a Flexible plan or Unlimited Premium plan. You can’t add a data-only SIM with an Unlimited Standard or Unlimited Essentials plan. Learn how to change your Google Fi plan.

Learn how data-only SIMs work

Types:

  • You can connect tablets and laptops with data-only SIMs.
  • Most modern devices support eSIM downloads. If your device requires a data-only SIM card, you can order one at no charge. Follow the instructions under "Order a data-only SIM card."
  • Data-only SIMs work with compatible devices.
  • To use the data-only SIM, your device must be unlocked and eSIM compatible.

Cost:

Tethering:

  • Tethering isn’t supported on devices with data-only SIMs.

Coverage:

  • Data-only SIMs provide coverage in over 200 countries and regions. Check the coverage map.
  • Coverage can also vary by device.

Data:

  • Data usage counts towards your monthly high-speed data usage.
  • High-speed data is up to 100 GB per person on Unlimited Premium and up to 15 GB per person on Flexible. After that, the speed reduces to 256 kbps.

Number of data-only SIMs:

  • You can add up to 4 data-only SIMs per line.
  • You can also use the same data-only SIM with multiple devices.
Add a data-only eSIM to your device or order a data-only SIM card

Important: Before you begin, make sure you’re connected to a strong Wi-Fi network.

Download a data-only eSIM

  1. On another device, go to your Google Fi account page.
  2. Select Manage plan and then Connect your tablet.
  3. To download your data-only eSIM, scan the QR code with your device’s camera.

Tip: If you can’t find the “Connect your tablet” button, you probably aren’t on the Flexible plan or Unlimited Premium plan. You must be on one of these plans for a data-only SIM to work. Learn how to change your Google Fi plan.

Order a data-only SIM card

  1. On your device, go to your Google Fi account page.
  2. Select Manage plan and then Connect your tablet and then Order for free.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps.

Activate your SIM card

  1. Go to fi.google.com/data.
  2. Enter the code found on the SIM card packaging.
  3. Insert your SIM card.

Activate data-only eSIM or SIM card on an iPad

  1. On your iPad, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Cellular Data and then Cellular Data Options.
  3. In the “Settings” field, enter:
    • Cellular Data APN: h2g2
    • LTE Setup APN: h2g2

Learn about SIM adapters

You need a nano SIM card for Google Fi. If your device has a different sized SIM tray, you need a SIM adapter. You can buy an adapter online or at any electronics retailer.

Find your device’s SIM card size

To find the SIM card size for your device, visit the manufacturer’s website. If your device uses a micro SIM, buy a nano SIM to micro SIM adapter.
