VOTE FOR THE GAME IN THE SPOOKTOBER VISUAL NOVEL JAM

Talk to the dead for clues 👻

  Gather evidence 🔍

  Comic book-style CGs 🩸

  Multiple endings 🕯️

  Estimated 2 to 3 hours ⏰

It begins with a phone plugged into a faulty socket and an electric malfunction, it ends with seven dead and one missing...

Detective Maxwell is called to investigate what seems to be, by all accounts, an impossible murder. In all of his years, he has never seen a crime this gruesome perpetrated in such a puzzling way. All he has are the testimonies of three known survivors — socialite and lobbyist Meredith Eloise, her stoic butler Richard Torres, and the one surviving guest, Alexander Florence. There's also the matter of the missing person, Felix McCain, Meredith's good-for-nothing and embittered employee... He must solve the case under a deadline; if he cannot catch the culprit by dawn, the place will be swarming with reporters, ruining his client's dear reputation. And Meredith values her good name more than her own life.

What's already an impossible crime gets dialed up when Maxwell finds an unexplainable oddity: a telephone that did not belong to any of the people at the party. Perhaps it was waiting for its next owner...

Loved this game so much- the art is sooo good, all the characters are genuinely fascinating and very fun to interact with.

Possible minor bug? (minimal spoilers): as far as I can tell, giving a certain character a certain item seems to be an important part of getting the Justice Served ending (mentioned in ending dialogue), but the game didn't seem to register that I had done this when I gave them the item while they were waiting outside. Had to load up a save and give them the item for a second time closer to the end of the game. Did not dampen my enjoyment, though- highly recommend!

I loved this game so much! The storytelling was rich and the mystery fell into place bit by bit in an amazingly satisfactory way.

I loved the characters and their motivations were complex and amazing. The murderer is actually one of my favorite characters in all of fiction as of right now and I really enjoyed other characters aswell. The phone was lowkey mu favorite I used it everywhere just to see what it'd say. I loved the one sheep ghost Leo, I thought his personality was hilarious, and his little bits where he got ticked off as well. I loved Jasmine too, her grading us on the dissection made me chuckle, and her straight-forward personality was also funny. I liked Hamilton as well and I LOVED his character design with the knives because THAT was cool. Mickey also was pretty funny to me being such a macho man, even if his backstory is pretty upsetting eith his father. Brooke was also cool and I liked her chacter design as well. Shay and Victor also had such a cute dynamic they actually made me so happy near the end cuz I was stressing out tryna find the murderer. I was also like super enjoying the living characters. I was shocked to discover who the husband of Richard was, and his design and personality of him himself also made me happy just like they said, smart and mysterious. Meredith was also a pretty cool character despite being such a flawed individual. Alexander was already my favorite charcter from the start too and his mere existence in this universe makes me happy. I love the characters I love the story, and I love the fact they were all doctors. Meredith's husband though is lowkey evil though hes the only one who made me sad. Also, trying to figure out the layout of the house was so confusing but for a game made for a jam this is peak. Other then that I could go on and on glazing all the characters and saying how great they are and how the storyline was amazing, but alas I must stop.

About the endings though, For one thing I want to brag about how I got Justice Served on the first playthrough, but I also want to ask if anyone knows anything about the dialog dropped in that ending and if it implies another ending, or a connection to another game that I dont know about. IF so I'd love to know about it, and decide to replay if thats the case.

Hey! The game is great, but I'm stuck with Justice unserved. Appreciate, if you can help me with getting other ending.

Finally got the other ending for this, and needless to say it's going down as one of my all-time favorite vns. The art definitely sold me (already a b00 fan so I might be biased), but the characters, the dialogue, story, humor, it all combined to make something that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions that you put your hands up for all of it. Can't wait to see what other shenanigans Maxwell Morgan gets into haha.

pretty fun game hope u guys make more stuff whit max like the wolf among us

Yay! Hurray! What an awesome read! I was hooked!

My only gripe is that navigating the house was SUCH a pain, and it made reentering *that* room much harder - especially with how important it was to the ending. But at least it seems like you guys will be mapping that up next!

Anyways! Remind me to NEVER pick "Investigator" as a career choice. My guts might be very perceptive, but my heart can't take more of this. (Make more for us to read grr)

I loved this game!, i would have liked to talk more to brooke or the teacher and the student, or even meet the hubbie but over all it´s a pretty great game

this game is peak ong, also Necro did not need to call me out that hard lmao 💘💘

Glad I served justice on the first try yippee :3

Overall amazing experience, but the important Attic conversation may be bugged on the Windows release? I did what my friend who was playing on mobile said to do but I just don't have the option to initiate the conversation, even after trying starting a game from scratch or using older saves

This game is so cool!! It'd be a huge shame if this game was just a one-shot thing. It has a whole lot of potential to be a series! I especially love that the detective we play as doesn't have the stereotypical edginess with him. He's just a calm polite dude who's good at solving mysteries ✨. Solid 9/10 for me by indie game standards. If this game ever gets a sequel, I'd definitely play it!

is there any guide or in-game tips on how to get all endings? currently stuck with justice incomplete

Me too

I should be upfront that I am friends with many of the developers, and some of my code is used in the game, though I had little to no direct involvement. So to be fair, I will mention any problems I have, even if nitpicky.

That said, this is still one of the best quality VNs I've played in a while. A full course meal in a very digestible size. There is room to expand, but for a game made in a month, I'm happy with it, leaving me wanting more. The level of polish of what it there more than makes up for any shortcomings.

The story is a fun murder mystery with a cast I would consider large for the limitations. Twelve speaking characters is a lot to flesh out in a 2-3 hour story while weaving in clues and hints. I might critique that it would be nice to get more from some of the characters, but it likely would have made it harder to keep track of all the elements within the limitations. Though the main cast of the living feel well developed enough to carry it, and the number of characters makes it a good popcorn read with friends. The path to the true ending has one complication that I feel could be smoothed out, but the steps to it are not difficult to reach otherwise. The balance of comedy and horror walks a fine line, having dark subject matter kept digestible with a deft attention to the tone. Characters who have done awful things are fun to watch bounce off Maxwell, who keeps a level head through it all.

All of the visuals are fantastic. Each sprite feels unique and has plenty of fun expressions to elevate their lines. Backgrounds are high quality, though the storage room and attic bg are a bit too similar imo. Also feels like maybe one or two more CGs were desired but likely were cut, though I'm glad the CGs that are there leave great impact and were worth prioritizing. The UI is very clear with plenty of style and polish. I'm especially impressed that the textbox manages to make lines bordering on a paragraph feel readable, even though lines that long are rare (which is a good thing).

All of the music is fantastic and perfectly fits the mood. The inclusion of a fully original soundtrack really elevates each scene. The sound design is also deserving of praise, with meaty thuds and every step appropriate to the room. Sorry, I'm not very articulate with sound stuff, but all of it is a cut above even VNs made with more time and budget.

I'm not sure why a game jam would have a voice acting category. The inclusion of sounds for the text appearing though is always fitting, and I will consider it close enough. The UI sounds can be a tad loud by default, but easy enough to turn them down to your preference. None of it was beneath the standard of the rest of the experience.

Cinematography is fantastic as always from Domn. His skill he's wielded upon Crypid Crush is in full effect to make scenes fun and bouncy when appropriate, and spooky and mysterious when needed. I especially enjoy the zoom in on the character introductions, which looks fantastic. The scene transitions are also very fun to see, and I appreciated their style. Only nitpick is some transitions between selecting someone to talk to or a topic and a dissolve into the conversation, where it feels odd the characters shift a small amount, even with the dissolve to smooth between them. Though fixing them would be an effort that is better spent after the jam is concluded.

Outside of the normal ratings, I have some small critiques, though most of them would be better saved for the post-jam version. I've seen one person have an issue with navigating between the rooms. I would recommend a map to select between scenes, even if some rooms are locked, better to just see all options than using the choice screen that is limited. Fixing choice menus to grey out previously selected options will be a nice QoL move. And the handful of typos and times a tooltip clips the UI were never major issues that held back the overall experience.

That all said, the project is a fantastic piece of spooky fun that I think makes for a fun read for the season. I look forward to recommending it every year for a fun, spooky romp. The passion and love put into every piece is on full display, and I'm left only wanting more from these characters and the world. Let's all hope the creators can come together to make more of this exceptional story and world.

When Max heads up to the attic, after he finds what he finds, he mentions that he should ask the phone some questions, but then I can't seem to do anything but leave. Is this intentional?

(1 edit) (+3)

Am having the same issue. I even restarted my file to see if it would work and Necronomicon just says "I enjoy our talks, we should do this more often" followed by a Max line about following that line of thought before going to the storage room.

EDIT: Found my solution by going back to the attic after reporting back to the others.

Thank you

Holy moly I love everything about this, the art, the mystery, the characters
The story is so well crafted and the method for how it all works is done so well, along with the UI elements and the artstyle giving it all an amazing feel an
As for the characters holy their expressions are so good, along with their characterizations, they all work so well and are a bunch of intruiging individuals, and some I absolutely hate in particular because one is such a massive ass, and the other deserves hellfire even with attempts of mercy from the other guy
AND THE MC OMGGGGG, he's so grouchy and like "I just want to do my job" but I love how cheery he can get sometimes and his cute faces and how much he loves his husband like HUHU
And one can't forget the audio and sound design, just good all around

i hope this will keep me fed while i wait for more madhouse content </3 (right almost forgot, i love the artsyle this game has)

I have become emotionally invested in this middle-aged detective and this cast of characters embarrassingly quickly, the writing is endearing as hell and the art and sound direction are phenomenal, this game's atmosphere is impeccable. Please tell me the planned future update to add in the cut endings is a soonish deal I don't know how long I can last with just the one, especially given how it plays out 😭

On a feedback level, the game is very good, but one quibble is that mister master bedroom's dialogue flow appears to be broken/weird. Namely, Maxwell mentions Meredith's threat before confronting her about it and actually getting her to say it, and he also goes through his entire confession spiel every time you initiate dialogue with him after, which isn't a hassle because it's skippable but it felt worth mentioning.

Again, a very enthralling mystery story. Even when I figured it out, that sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop never let up, right up until the end, and that's hard to do in a mystery story, so kudos for pulling it off with aplomb.

There's only one ending for game jam version?

(+3)

Yes! More endings will be added in a future update

The original additional endings were cut for time

(2 edits) (+2)

To be more specific,  there's a few endings to the one route there is but more are planned

So, just to confirm, the endings are for failing to answer the questions, justice incomplete, and that's it for the jam version?

(+1)

to get Justice Complete you need to return the will, answer justice, and do all of the necronomicon interrogation questions

Otherwise you get justice incomplete

Ah, completely forgot about that, will have to play through again it seems haha. thank you!

I loved the game alot, but I would say the UI design needs a bit, specifically I'd love to access the log/history without going into the menu to quit out. other than that, it's got my vote. I love the visuals especially.

Glad you enjoyed! And thanks for the feedback, we'll see what we can do regarding those buttons! 🔧

Hey there. The Linux version is messed up. It only unpacks another file that's missing a file type. But that's not needed anyway because the PC version contains the .sh file to run it on Linux anyway.

So basically, you might as well remove the Linux version and mark the PC version for Linux too.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We followed your suggestion.
