Description
THIS INVENTION relates to an improved roll formed section. In particular, the invention is directed to a roll formed section having a notched tab to facilitate connection to another section.
BACKGROUND ART Roll formed sections are generally of constant cross section throughout their length (apart from any apertures punched, drilled or otherwise formed in the section). Flat plates are often used to connect such sections. These are separate to the sections since, due to the nature of roll forming, it is difficult, if not impossible, to provide flat connecting lugs, tabs or *other extensions integrally on the roll formed sections.
15 Any such extensions are also rolled during forming to conform with the roll formed profile of the section. It is difficult to straighten such extensions.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved roll formed section.
S"SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In one broad form, the invention provides a roll formed section having at least one integrally formed tab portion extending from an end thereof, characterised 25 in that the section has a notch formed therein at or near **go e the base of the tab portion to facilitate straightening S* of the tab after a roll forming operation.
The tab portion is typically in the form of a tab, lug or similar extension.
The notch at the base of the tab portion is typically a cut extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the section.
The cut is suitably shorter than the width of the base of the tab portion, so that the tab is still connected to the end of the section by bridging portions on either side of the cut.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood and put into practice, preferred embodiments thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a connection between two roll formed sections.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of an alternative connection between the sections.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT As shown in Fig. 1, two roll formed sections 11 can be fastened together in a T-connection by fixing tabs 12 on section 10 to section 11. No additional joining pieces are required. The tabs 12 may be fixed to 15 section 11 by screwing, riveting, bolting or other suitable means.
Screw holes can be provided in the tab 12 for *-*that purpose, as illustrated in the drawing.
The tabs 12 are integral extensions of the 20 section 10, and are cut from the sheet from which section is formed, prior to the roll forming of the section.
During the roll forming operation, the tabs 12 are also *"roll formed to fit the sectional profile of the section Hence, it is necessary to flatten or straighten the tabs 12 after the roll forming operation.
A notch 13 is formed in the section 10, at the base of the tab 12. The "base" is that area of the tab 12 where it joins the remainder of the section The notch 13 is suitably a cut formed by punching or cutting the sheet metal of the section However, the notch 13 may be an aperture, groove or other weakened section to facilitate the straightening or flattening of the tab 12 while allowing the remainder of the section 10 to keep its roll formed profile.
The cut is shorter than the width of the tab 12, so that the tab remains connected to the section by the two bridging portions at the opposite ends of the cut.
4 Fig. 2 illustrates an alternative T-connection between the two sections 10, 11.
The foregoing describes only one embodiment of the invention, and modifications which are obvious to those skilled in the art may be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. A roll formed section having at least one integrally formed tab portion extending therefrom, characterised in that the section has a notch formed therein at or near the base of the tab portion to facilitate flattening or straightening of the tab.
2. A roll formed section as claimed in claim 1 wherein the notch is a cut transverse to the longitudinal axis of the section.
3. A roll formed section as claimed in claim 2, wherein the cut is shorter than the width of the tab portion.
