Abstract
Disclosed is a resealable fastener that can be applied to packages to reseal the package after it is open. The resealable fastener comprises an engagement region that creates the seal, and an adhesive surface for attachment to the package to be sealed. The resealable fastener may come in the form of a roll, which allows for varying lengths of the fastener to be dispensed.
Description
RESEALABLE FASTENER FOR PACKAGES
FIELD
The present disclosure relates to fasteners that may be applied to products such as bags to create a resealable package. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a resealable fastener tape.
BACKGROUND
There are many instances wherein it would be desirable to reseal a package once it is opened. For example, in the food industry, items such as pre-packaged salads and snack foods come in bags that need to be cut open. To close the bag after use, the user frequently uses items such as an elastic or clips. The air tight seal is not retained, and the freshness or shelf-life of the product is reduced.
Resealable bags, such as the ZiplocTM bag, are known. However, it is time consuming and wasteful to transfer the items to the resealable bags. It would be useful to have a fastener that can be applied to any bag or package, allowing that package to be resealed once opened.
SUMMARY
The disclosure relates to resealable fasteners that can be applied to packages. The resealable fastener can be made in a variety of lengths and/or come in the form of a substrate sheet that can be cut. The resealable fastener may also be dispensed from a roll, such as a tape roll on a spool.
In one embodiment, there is provided a resealable fastener for sealing packages comprising a substrate sheet; a resealable engagement region which extends longitudinally along the length of the substrate sheet; an upper adhesive region which extends longitudinally along the length of the substrate sheet above the engagement region; a lower adhesive region which extends longitudinally along the length of the substrate sheet below the engagement region; the upper and lower adhesive regions being present on both surfaces of the fastener; wherein the fastener is applied to the package to be sealed by adhering the upper and lower adhesive regions against the surface of the package to be resealed.
In another embodiment, there is provided a roll for dispensing lengths of a resealable fastener, comprising a continuous surface substrate sheet comprising an engagement region and one or more adhesive regions, the engagement region comprising interlockable male and female portions which can be sealed together, wherein the sheet is in the form of a roll that can be dispensed in various lengths.
In another embodiment, there is provided a resealable fastener for sealing packages comprising a substrate sheet; an engagement region on the substrate sheet, the engagement region comprising two interlockable portions; and one or more adhesive regions on the substrate sheet, wherein the adhesive regions can be applied to side near the top of the package to be resealed; wherein a slit is located in proximity to the engagement region, wherein the slit can be cut once the fastener is adhered to the package.
In yet another embodiment, there is provided a fastener for resealing packages, the fastener comprising a substrate sheet; an adhesive surface on one side of the substrate sheet; an engagement region on the surface of the substrate sheet opposite to the adhesive surface; and a slitting means above the engagement region, wherein the fastener is applied to a surface and the slitting means is used to slit the region in proximity to the engagement region.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The disclosure relates to fasteners that can be applied to packages such as bags to reseal the package after it has been opened. The fasteners are generally strips with an adhesive surface which allows the fastener to be attached to the package to be resealed. The fasteners are resealable, which means that once a fastener is attached to a package, the package can be opened and sealed again. As the fasteners can be made in, or cut to, a variety of sizes, the fasteners can be applied to a range of packages. The fasteners may also come in the form of a tape roll, which allows for the fasteners to be dispensed at various lengths, according to the package to be sealed.
The fasteners can be applied to any numbers of different packages, but may be useful in sealing bags containing fresh or frozen food. Because the fasteners form an air-tight seal, the food inside the bag will stay fresh longer.
The fastener has a sealing portion which allows the fastener to be sealed, and an adhesive portion, which allows the fastener to be applied to a package. In one embodiment, the sealing portion comprises two interlockable members, which can be interlocked to form a seal. In another embodiment, the interlockable members function as a zipper, and the zipper portions fit together to form a resealable zipper. The fastener can be applied to a surface of a package to be sealed by adhering the adhesive portion to the surface, essentially imparting the sealing mechanism to the package. In one embodiment, the fastener comprises a cutting mechanism for cutting the region about the resealable portion.
Figure 1 shows a top view of the fastener according to one embodiment. The fastener 1 comprises a substrate sheet 4, which is generally a strip-like shape. The substrate sheet may be made of a material such as plastic or a thermoplastic resin or a silicon-type material. The substrate sheet 4 comprises an engagement region 6, which generally extends longitudinally along the sheet 4. The substrate sheet 4 also comprises an upper adhesive surface 8 and a lower adhesive surface 10. The adhesive surfaces are present on both sides of the substrate sheet. Both the upper 8 and lower 10 adhesive surfaces extend along the longitudinal margins of the substrate sheet 4. The adhesive surfaces 8, 10 are used to attach the fastener to the package to be sealed. Generally, the fastener would be applied to the inner surface of the mouth of a bag by adhering the adhesive surfaces to the bag.
In one embodiment, the adhesive surfaces of the fastener may be covered with paper so as to prevent the adhesive surfaces from drying out or sticky to other surfaces before the fastener is applied to the package. The paper can be peeled off, thereby exposing the adhesive surface, in the same manner that paper is used to cover the back of a sticker.
As shown in Figure 2, the engagement region 6 comprises a female engagement portion 12 and a male engagement portion 14. The female engagement portion 12 comprises at least one groove 16 and the male engagement portion 18 comprises at least one tongue 20. The male engagement portion 12 can be sealed to the female engagement portion 14 by placement of the tongue 20 of the male portion 14 into the groove 16 of the female portion 12. The male and female portions are generally made of a semi-rigid material such as plastic, rubber or silicon.
In one embodiment, illustrated in Figure 3, the fastener comprises a zipper 22 with a clasp 24.
The clasp 24 can be grasped and the zipper 22 pulled or slid along the female engagement portion 12 and the male engagement portion 14, thereby sealing the two portions together.
In operation, a user would apply the fastener to the inside surface of the mouth of a bag by placing the adhesive surface of the fastener against the inner surfaces of the mouth of the bag to be sealed. The engagement region would then to positioned inside of the bag, and the engagement region can be opened and closed by grasping above the engagement region.
The fastener may come in the form of a series of strips of varying sizes.
However, in one embodiment, the fastener may come in the form of a roll, wherein strips can be cut out into individual pieces are it is needed. The fastener may also come in the form of a tape roll, wherein the fastener can be dispensed in the appropriate size.
