Traditional mascara brushes usually take the form of a cylindrical straight brush on the end of the rod. Some users may desire the option of using a brush with a straight or curved configuration. Some such devices are known in the art, such as US Patent 8,141,561 and/or US Patent 8,881,745, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference. These disclosed devices generally work by manipulating a filament to pull on a brush located at the distal end of the rod. Some examples instead allow the filament to be pushed, such as by using a slanted filament that can be pulled into the rod to maintain a straight configuration, and the brush assumes a curved configuration as the filament extends into the brush.

Said devices have their disadvantages, such as complexity and potential for improper use. For example, it is desirable for the brush to be in a straight configuration when removed from the cosmetic container. This prevents the wiper from the container from damaging the brush and/or putting tension on the brush when it is removed, which tension could be released when the brush is completely off the wiper, causing splatter of mascara and creating a mess. Figure 5 shows the rod 250 alone. The bracket at 340 illustrates features of some embodiments of the invention. The rod includes a stop edge (highlighted in Figure 8) that abuts the bottle top/wiper 332, preventing the rod from moving out of the fully compressed position shown.
