Description

The present invention relates to portable or portable radio transmitters and more particularly to radiotelephones.

The range of these radiotelephones is limited in particular by the power that they can radiate. This is why it has been envisaged to give this power relatively high values. These values are such that a potentially harmful physiological effect could be caused in the body of a user who would absorb a large fraction of radiofrequency radiation having such a power. Various provisions have been proposed to limit this fraction in order to protect the user.

Les documents Patent Abstracts of Japan, vol. Patent Abstracts of Japan, vol. 8, N) 206 (E-267) 1643, September 20, 1984, JP-A-59 92 629 (HITACHI SEISAKUSHO) and EP-A-508 299 (SIEMENS AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT) provide for an enhancement of the radiating part of the antenna 'a radiotelephone, this in order to move this radiating part away from the head of the user. Such an increase increases the total height of the device and / or complicates its mechanical structure.

The present invention has in particular the following aims:
  • allow a long range to be imparted to a portable transmitter of simple mechanical structure and of limited size, in particular to a radiotelephone, this invention being able however to find application whatever the power of the transmitter considered,
  • and / or prevent the radio frequency radiation emitted by such a transmitter from having a physiological effect on a user using this transmitter for a prolonged period.

For these purposes it relates to a portable radio transmitter comprising:
  • a radiating system for emitting radiation,
  • and protection means to protect a part of the body of a user of this transmitter against radiation from this system,

this transmitter being characterized by the fact that these protection means comprise an absorbent screen arranged so as to be interposed between at least one zone with high emission of this radiating system and said part of the body to be protected when the transmitter is in a position of service relating to the user, this screen comprising an absorbent structure for converting part of the energy of said radiation into heat.

Using the attached schematic figure, we will describe below how the present invention can be implemented, it being understood that the elements and arrangements mentioned and represented are only by way of nonlimiting example .

This figure represents a view of both a radiotelephone produced according to this invention and of a user of this radiotelephone.

In this figure, this radiotelephone is shown at 4 in a typical service position relative to user 2.

Referring to this figure by way of example, a general description will first be given of a transmitter according to this invention.

The transmitter 4 conventionally comprises the following elements:
  • A generator 10 creating an electric oscillation at an emission frequency located in the radio frequency domain. The average power of such a generator is currently typically around 0.5 W. However, the present invention makes it possible to envisage a much higher power, for example 20 Watts.
  • A modulation system 12, 14 controlling this generator. This system is arranged so that it can be controlled by the user 2. It modulates the oscillation by an information-carrying signal.
  • Finally a radiating system 16 receiving the electric oscillation and emitting in response a radiation 20 carrying information. The function of this radiating system is to convert the electrical oscillation into radiation with as high a conversion energy efficiency as possible. This is why its surface is made so as to be electrically good conductive, that is to say that in practice it is typically made of a good conductive metal. It is traversed by currents having densities, expressible in amperes per centimeter, and various orientations, so that the power density expressible in Watts per square centimeter of the radiation emitted from an area of this surface varies according to the area considered. In fact the radiation is mainly emitted from one or more zones which will be called hereinafter "high emission zones". Such an area is represented at 40.

According to the present invention, this transmitter further comprises a screen 6 having an inner face 6A and an outer face 6B. When the transmitter 4 is placed in its operating position, the arrangement of this screen is such that it is interposed between at least one high-emission zone of the radiating system 16 and the part of the body to be protected 8 and that it then has its inner and outer faces facing this high emission zone and this part of the body, respectively.

Une structure de ce genre est connue sous la marque ECCOSORB SF de la firme belge GRACE N.V.This screen comprises an absorbent structure 6C capable of converting into heat a majority of the energy of an electromagnetic radiation which passes through it and which has said emission frequency. This structure can include a stack of differentiated layers whose electrical permittivity ε, magnetic permeability µ and electrical resistivity ρ are chosen to ensure optimal absorption of the emitted radiation. A structure of this kind is known under the brand ECCOSORB SF from the Belgian firm GRACE N.V.

Preferably, the screen 6 further comprises an electrically good conductive layer 6D on the side of its outer face 6B, the absorbent structure 6C being located on the side of its inner face 6A. Layer 6D is a flat or curved metal sheet.

Elles semblent de manière plus générale devoir être comprises entre 3 et 100 mm.This transmitter further comprises a distance maintaining means 18 capable of maintaining a safety distance between the radiating system 16 and the body of the user 2. This distance maintaining means is advantageously constituted by a cover 18. It maintains non only a safety distance such as 33 between the radiating system 16 and the body of the user when the transmitter 4 is in its operating position but also a safety distance such as 34 and 35, when, for example inadvertently, this transmitter 4 is placed out of its operating position in contact with this body. It also maintains such a distance 34 or 35 between the radiating system 16 and the body of other people who come into contact with the transmitter this, in cooperation with the other elements of the transmitter, in an omnidirectional manner. These safety distances are typically between 5 and 10 mm if the average power of the transmitter is close to 0.5 watts. They seem more generally to be between 3 and 100 mm.

As shown, when the distance maintaining means is constituted by a cover 18, it surrounds the radiating system 16 and can also advantageously contain the screen 6. It has, with respect to said radiation, an absorption efficiency at least reduced compared to the absorption efficiency of the screen 6 and preferably substantially zero so as not to unnecessarily weaken the radiation emitted when the transmitter is in its operating position.

In the absence of a screen such as 6, possibly sufficient protection could in certain cases be sufficiently ensured by such a means of maintaining distance.

Typically the modulation system comprises a control panel 12 for controlling the emission of a radiation constituting a switching signal capable of establishing a radio link between this transmitter 4 and a correspondent 22 selected by this switching signal. It also includes a microphone 14 for modulating radiation 20 constituting a transmission signal and carrying information to this correspondent.

Always typically it is carried out in the form of a radiotelephone. In this case it includes:
  • A radiation sensor constituted by the radiating system 16 and capable of receiving a radio reception wave 24 emitted by the correspondent 22,
  • A receiver 26 connected to this sensor to form reception signals from this reception wave,
  • And a speaker 30 to convert some of these reception signals into a sound signal.

The service position shown of such a radiotelephone places the microphone 14 and the speaker 30 within reach of the mouth 32 and an ear 36 of the user 2, respectively. The user's head 8 then constitutes the part of his body to be protected. Another service position can place the radiotelephone in a pocket or hung on the user's belt.

Typiquement la fréquence d'émission est comprise entre 100 MHz et 100 GHz.Typically the transmission frequency is between 100 MHz and 100 GHz.
