Abstract

1,096,826. Cooling pistons. SPECIALLOID Ltd. May 17, 1965 [June 29, 1964], No. 26875/64. Heading F2T. A piston 4 is cooled by oil or other liquid which passes outwardly over inclined surfaces 8 on each side of an inverted ridge 9 on the underside of the crown approximately in the vertical plane containing the gudgeon-pin axis and is circulated through an annular chamber 1 in the piston head. The chamber 1 is formed by a cast in hollow sheet metal ring 2 having inlet and outlet ports 5, 6 at the ends of the tubes 3 extending above the bottom of the chamber so that a certain amount of oil is always retained in the chamber. Alternatively, the ports may be formed by punching-out a lip so that it projects above the floor of the ring 2. In use, oil supplied under pressure from a jet 11 the the connecting rod 10 passes over the surfaces 8 and is carried by inertia into either the port 5 or 6, the excess oil in the chamber escaping through the other port 6 or 5. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the inlet and outlet ports (23) open radially into the piston interior and are formed in the upper part of the inner radial wall of the chamber (21).
