Abstract

Screw-thread and anti-scuffing lubricants in paste form comprise (a) graphite or molybdenum disulphide as solid lubricant; (b) a film-forming additive comprising cadmium oxide, lead oxide (PbO), lead sulphide, or zinc oxide, and (c) a liquid hydrocarbon oil; the ratio of (a) to (b) being at least 1:1 by weight. Component (c) may be a high-boiling liquid such as a solvent neutral oil, and the compositions may also contain a low boiling liquid which evaporates on exposure to the atmosphere, e.g. white spirit, solvent naphtha, toluene, or xylene. Many other additives may also be present, including a wax, chlorinated wax, lead powder, an organic sulphonate such as a petroleum sulphonate, and fillers and/or thickening agents such as amorphous silica, ethyl cellulose, organically modified bentonite and montmorrillonite clays, organic polymer thickeners, and metal soaps. Exemplified compositions contain some of these optional additives.
