Abstract
1,182,262. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. NICKOLS AUTOMATICS (E.M.I.) Ltd. 2 May, 1967 [2 May, 1966], No. 19249/66. Heading F2S. An hydraulic shock-absorber, to control, e.g. the motion, e.g. of a pneumatic actuator for the turret of a capstan lathe, comprises a doubleacting piston 10 which works in an oil filled cylinder 14 and has a rod 12 for coupling, e.g. to the pneumatic actuator, the two ends of the cylinder 14 being connected by a first path consisting of an external pipe of large bore, e.g. ¢ inch, having one, or as shown, two skip valves 18, 20, and allowing substantial free flow of oil from one end of the cylinder to the other, and a second external path including one, or as shown, two restrictor valves 26, 28, through which a restricted flow of oil may be directed by closing of one of the valves 18, 20, and an air pressurized oil reservoir 24. The valves 18, 20, which are pneumatically operated, electrically controlled, and spring biased to the open position, are arranged in series with the valve which controls the actuator of the turret to assure correct operation. If the electric control is such that air is admitted to the actuators when control current is interrupted the system will fail to safe. With both valves 18, 20 open there is a relatively unrestricted flow of oil between the ends of the cylinder. On forward motion of the rod 12, in the direction of the arrow, the valve 18 is closed so that oil flows through the pipe 36, the restrictor 28, pipe 30, the reservoir 24, pipe 22 and the open valve 20 to the other end of the cylinder 14. The valve 20 closes during movement of the piston in the opposite direction, oil flowing through pipe 34, restrictor 26, pipe 30, the reservoir 24, pipe 22, and the open valve 18, to the front end of the cylinder 24. A buffer valve (42) is included in the pipe to check the return feed of the turret and includes a pneumatically operated piston and cylinder unit (46), (48) which controls a through passage the size of which is controlled by an adjusting nut 52, a microswitch, not shown, being located near the fully retracted position of the turret, Fig. 3, not shown. A further stop valve may be interposed in the pipe 30, Fig. 1.
