Abstract
1346596 Mixing in conduits ALLIED COLLOIDS MFG CO Ltd 20 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 24435/70 Heading B1C [Also in Division Cl] A method of flocculating or coagulating comprises passing a stream of liquid suspension containing added high M.W. polymeric flocculant or coagulant through a pipe having a series of baffles fixed internally along its length such that the flocculant or coagulant is rapidly distributed throughout the stream. In Fig. 4 the baffles 4, 5, 6 and 7 are fixed on stem 9 which is slidable so that some of the baffles may be withdrawn into extension 15 of pipe 1 to reduce the number of baffles encountered by the flowing stream entering through inlet 18. The baffles may be fixed to the internal surface of the pipe or fitted within a cage of e.g. four parallel rods. The baffles may be vertical or at angle to the vertical and offset from one another. The baffles may be arranged so that the flow in one part of the pipe is spiral in one direction and in another part of the pipe spiral in the opposite direction. The flocculant may be acrylamide polymers and copolymers, hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile, polystyrene sulphonic acid, salts of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acid, polyethylene imines, polyethylene oxides, polyamide epichlorohydrin resins, polyacrylates and starches.
