Abstract
1444560 Flexible hoses DUNLOP Ltd 20 Feb 1974 [3 March 1973 16 June 1973] 10447/73 and 28727/73 Heading F2P A flexible hose having a co-axial helical supporting coil is reinforced by a structure which is disposed relative to the coil so as to span the gaps between the turns thereof and which comprises a thin supporting membrane of non- woven material which supports a layer of reinforcing material disposed adjacent a surface of the membrane, the non-woven membrane being formed from randomly orientated filaments, e.g. nylon filaments bonded together at their cross-over points. The membrane may be impregnated with polymeric material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber. The thin supporting membrane may comprise a radially outer or inner portion of the hose. The reinforcement structure may be formed by winding at least one strip of non-woven material, e.g. of nylon filaments over the support coil and helically winding over this layer at least one strip of reinforcing material which may be either a plurality of reinforcing filaments or a woven material. The filaments may be in yarn or cord form and may be of nylon, cotton, rayon, polyester, polypropylene, glass carbon or steel and the woven fabric made from cotton, rayon, nylon, Terylene or polypropylene fibres. The windings may be bonded together by polymeric material (examples are given). Alternatively the reinforcement structure is a preformed compound strip disposed either radially inwardly or outwardly of the coil. The hose may be provided with a single helical coil or at least two helical coils of similar or different diameters and each coil may be embedded in a layer of polymeric material, e.g. natural rubber. In one embodiment a hose Fig. 1 comprises a helically wound inner support coil 10 of galvanized steel wire; a first reinforcement structure 11 formed by helically winding around coil 10 a strip comprising a plurality of filaments 12 and a non-woven support membrane 13; a second similar reinforcement structure 14 wound helically in the opposite sense to the layer 11 so that the filaments of both structures are adjacent and a second coil 15 wound over layers 11, 14 so that its coils lie between those of coil 10. In another embodiment Fig. 3 a heavier duty hose comprises a helically wound inner layer 100 of natural rubber; a first reinforcing structure 101 similar to structure 11, Fig. 1; a pair of helically wound coils 102, 103 of steel wire embedded within a mass of rubber 104; a reinforcing structure 105 similar to structure 101 and an outer covering layer 106.
