1403996 Biological purification of effluents L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC ANON POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 10 Aug 1972 [10 Aug 1971] 37445/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division B1] A process for the production, use and regeneration of a free oxygen-containing gaseous mixture, as for example in the biological purification of effluent comprises subjecting a gaseous oxygen-containing starting mixture to oxygen enrichment after removing from the starting mixture at least part of one or more constituents (other than oxygen) initially present, supplying the oxygen-enriched gaseous mixture to a system which utilizes some of its oxygen and produces a residual mixture containing unused oxygen and a by-product, subjecting the residual gaseous mixture to a regeneration process in which the by-product is at least partially removed to obtain a regenerated mixture, and recycling the regenerated mixture to undergo oxygen enrichment. In the apparatus shown, air or other free oxygen containing gas entering at 1 is compressed at 2, mixed with residual gases from oxidation reactor 32 and passed through one of regenerators 7, 4, 40 to fractionating column 18, the generator having been cooled in an earlier part of its cycle by a flow of cold nitrogen from the top of column 18. The oxygen-rich fraction leaving the column by line 9 is reheated by passage through the regenerators and is fed through line 25 and compressor 33 to oxidation reactor 32. Part of the initial air feed from line 1 is passed through line 5 and carbon dioxide absorbers 30, 31, cooled by heat exchange with waste nitrogen in 27 and fed to the top of fractionating column 18. Each of the regenerators 7, 4, 40 operates with a 3-stage cycle; in forward flow (left to right as shown) carbon dioxide and water are condensed out from the incoming flow of compressed air-residual gas mixture in line 3; in reverse flow first the carbon dioxide &c. is removed by entrainment in a (warmed) flow of nitrogen from heat-exchanger 50, then the oxygen-enriched gas stream in line 9 is rewarmed on passing through the regenerator. In the 2 stage air fractionating column 19, 20, the first zone 19 is operated at a higher pressure than the second zone 20. Two fractions from the first zone 19, an oxygen-rich fraction in line 23 and an oxygen-given fraction in line 24 are cooled in exchanger 50 and expanded and introduced into the second zone 20. The condensed mixture at the bottom of zone 20 is revaporized and heat-exchanged in unit 21 with the top fraction from column 19. Almost pure nitrogen is evacuated from the top of column 20 and almost pure oxygen leaves by line 9.
