Abstract

1405414 Electro-chemical analysis WILKINSON SWORD Ltd 9 Oct 1972 [2 Nov 1971] 50825/71 Heading G1N Reducible and non-reducible passivating films on a metal surface, e.g. razor blades, are distinguished by making the metal surface 6 one electrode of an electrolytic cell 5 whose other, stainless steel, electrode 8 is electrolytically inert in the cell, applying a potential difference between the electrodes so that the metal surface 6 is negative and measuring the energy capacity of the cell. In the arrangement shown the potential difference from supply 12 is applied to the cell 5 and after a predetermined time e.g. 1.3 seconds timing circuit 20 switches current recorder 26 into the circuit to measure the current flowing. This current is much greater if a reducible passivating film is present than if a non-reducible passivating film is present, Fig. 2 (not shown). In an alternative arrangement Fig. 3 (not shown), the recorder 26 is replaced by a coulometer which measures the electrical charge flowing through the cell for a predetermined time e.g. 15 seconds beginning when the P.D. is applied. The number of coulombs is indicative of the reducibility content of the film. The electrode 8 is stainless steel and the electrolyte 59.8% H 3 PO 4 , 14.9% H 2 SO 4 , 0.8% CrO 3 and the remainder water.
