Abstract

1414600 L(-)lactide-glycolide copolymer fibre ETHICON Inc 8 Feb 1974 5886/74 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] A plasticized L(-)lactide-glycolide copolymer monofilament suture having a straight tensile strength of at least 65,000 p.s.i. and a Young's Modulus of from 3.9 x 10<SP>5</SP> p.s.i. to 7.9 x 10<SP>5</SP> p.s.i. is obtained by polymerizing 10-15 mol per cent L(-)lactide with 90-85 mol per cent glycolide and plasticizing with 10-15 weight per cent of a plasticizer. The monofilament is prepared by extruding the plasticizer copolymer using a screw-extruder, passing the filament through the water bath, collecting on a take-up spool, and conditioning the filament on the spool by heating for half-hour at 65‹ C., drawing 4X in a glycerin bath at 107‹ C. and the drawn filament is wound on a rack under tension and the rack is immerised in bis-2- methoxyethyl phthalate maintained at 120‹ C. for 24 hours.
