Abstract

1424517 Dyestuffs containing polymeric residues IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 July 1973 [1 Aug 1972] 35913/72 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Divisions C4-C5] Dyestuffs, which are also dispersing agents used in making organic pigment dispersions, and which have the formula D-(Z-R) n wherein D is the radical of a dyestuff which is attached to Z through a carbon atom of an aromatic ring present in D, Z is a divalent bridging group, n is an integer of 1-8, and R is the residue of a polymer chain, are made by reacting a polymer containing replaceable hydrogen atoms, e.g. in a carboxyl or hydroxy group, with a dye containing one or more Z-Y groups in which Y is Cl or Br, suitably in the presence of an acid binding agent and a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium compound, and preferably under anhydrous conditions in an inert organic liquid. In examples, the polymeric reactant is one of carboxy-terminated polystyrene, carboxy-terminated styrene lauryl methacrylate copolymer, carboxy-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) and the condensation product of 2-naphthol/30 mols. ethylene oxide; and the dye reactant is copper tris(or pentakis)chloromethyl phthalocyanine, chloromethylated p,p<SP>1</SP> - bis - (6 - methylbenzthiazol- 2 - yl)azobenzene, 1 - (γ - chloro - # - hydroxypropylamino) - 4 - [41 - (# - hydroxyethoxy) anilino] - anthraquinone and 2 - methyl - 4- N,N - bis - (# - hydroxyethyl)amino - 41 - (N- #-chloroethylsulphonamido)azobenzene.
