Abstract

1515297 Screw sockets; joints for tubular frames A B COMENS 15 Aug 1975 [16 Aug 1974 25 Sept 1974] 36196/74 and 41769/74 Headings F2H and F2M An expansible plug 10 for securing a tubular member 12 to another member 26 (Fig. 1) or 13 (Fig. 7) is slidable into the end of the tubular member 12 and has an axial bore 16 leading from the outer end of the plug to a cavity 18 housing an insert 20 or 21 engaged by a screw 22 rotatably extending through the bore 16 so that rotation of the screw moves the insert longitudinally, the sides 24 of the cavity being shaped so that movement of the insert 20 or 21 towards the outer end of the plug expands the plug radially to grip the tubular member 12, the plug 10 having longitudinal splits 25 and distortable laterally projecting portions 28 or a cut-back enlarged portion adjacent the outer end of the plug to engage the inside of the tubular member so that the plug can be a firm push fit into tubular members of different internal sizes prior to expansion of the plug. The tubular member and the plug may be of square or circular cross-section, and the plug has an enlarged head 14. The plug is preferably of plastics. In Figs. 1 and 7, the insert 10 is a hexagonal nut which fits into a cavity 16 of hexagonal cross-section. In Fig. 6 a metal hexagonal nut 31 is embedded in a plastics insert 21 having a frusto-conical portion 27. In Fig. 7, a frusto-conical washer 33 is urged by the nut 20 into the tapered portion 24 of the cavity. Pips 35 on the plug head 14 engage holes 37 drilled in a second tubular member 13 to be secured to the member 12. In Fig. 9, a bolt 39 threaded at both ends engages the nuts of respective plugs 10 in adjacent ends of tubular members 12, 17, and extends through a tubular element 15 to which a tubular element 19 is secured using a further plug 10. The inserts are tightened to expand the plugs in members 12, 17 by rotating the member 17 about its longitudinal axis relative to the rest of the structure. The laterally projecting portions may be formed by portions (32) of the plug outer surface adjacent the head which diverge outwardly from the plug axis towards the head (Fig. 5, not shown).
