Abstract

9573. Bachelet, E. April 19. Systems.-Relates to a system for transmitting mail, cash, and small parcel carriers or for freight and passengers in which the carriers are levitated during transportation by electro-magnetic repulsion, the carriers being propelled in any known manner but preferably by a series of solenoids surrounding the track. Figs, 1 and 3 show sectional plan and end views of one form in which the electro-magnetic levitating-system is combined with an electromagnetic propulsion system. The carriers 2 are levitated by parallel sets of electro-magnets each set comprising preferably four electro-magnets 1, 1<a>, 1<b>, 1<c> arranged in series and energized by an intermittent or periodic current from the generator 1<g> through the contact rail 1<i>, collectors 2i, 2<e> on the carriers, contact rail 1<e>, and return leads 1<f>. By sectioning one of the contact rails, only those groups of electro-magnets which surround the carriers can become energized. The propulsion solenoids 4 are similarly energized automatically and progressively from the direct-current generator 4<c> through the rails 4<e>, 4<f>, collectors 4<g>, 4<h> on the carriers, and return leads 4<b>. Soft-iron bands or cores 4<n> are provided on the carriers for the solenoids 4 to act on. The levitation electro-magnets in each set or group are preferably oppositely wound so that their poles alternate. The carrier 2 is made hollow and in pivotally connected sections, and preferably of very light conducting-material such as aluminium. The induced currents set up in the aluminium react on the inducing-field and cause the levitation of the carrier. A guard 3 is arranged above the track. In a modified arrangement, the carriers move in a closed tube made of non-magnetic material. Fig. 10 shows a cross-sectional view of a further modification in which the levitating electro-magnets are mounted on the carriers, and the guideway is constructed of, or lined with, non- magnetic conducting-material such as aluminium. The carrier may also carry the source of electric energy for energizing the electro-magnets.
