Abstract

9431. Petter, G. B. June 28. [Cognate Application, 11,379/15.] Movable-abutment type; working-fluid supply; cooling parts; packing vanes.-Relates to rotary engines and pumps of the kind described in Specification 20,411/02, having an alternately expanding and contracting working chamber confined by a number of contacting rotors shaped like pointed ovals and rotating in the same direction. In the pump shown in Figs. 1 and 2<a> working chambers are formed by both the inner and outer surfaces of the four rotors a, the fluid from the main inlet f being admitted to the outer chamber by a non-return valve h, and to the inner chamber bv ports d in the end wall in communication with the supply from another non-return valve h. The fluid is delivered to the outlet g through similar ports e and non-return valves h. The ports d, e may be on the same side of the casing. In a modification, Fig. 9, the fluid is admitted to the working chambers through ports 20 in the rotors 18 and discharged through ports 21 in the rotors 19. Stationary cut-off plates 22 are provided; alternatively, the end walls may be fitted with ports and cut-off devices, or non- return valves may be employed. In a further modification, the motive fluid is admitted to the inner working chamber through ports in the fixed hollow shafts of the rotors, which ports register periodically with inlet passages in the rotors, and exhaust is facilitated by recessing the sides of the rotors and of the casing. A modification working as an internal-combustion engine is described. The tips of the rotors may be cooled by delivering a stream of water on to the hot surfaces; or water may be circulated through hollow chambers in the rotors. Packing-pieces, spring-pressed, riveted, or otherwise fastened, may be fitted at the tips of the rotors. Six rotors and two inner chambers may be used. or eight rotors and three inner chambers, or a still larger number.
