Abstract

A child-resistant container comprises an open-ended sleeve 1 and a tray 2 which is slidingly held therein and which has two flexible, tapered catches 2', projections 4 on which engage indentations 1' in the sleeve when the tray is fully received therein. The tray 2 is released by manually depressing from the outside, pressure points 3 on the sleeve 1 which act on further points 3' to displace the projections 4 from the indentations 1' and thus allow the tray to slide. A conventional matchbox may be combined with the container. <IMAGE>

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to child-resistant containers I, ALAN FRANCIS DAY, of 1 33 Birch Tree Avenue, West Wickham, Kent BR4 9EQ, a British subject, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to child-resistant containers. Paricularly suitable as or for use with matchboxes. According to the present invention, there is provided a child-resistant container comprising a sleeve having openings at both ends, and a tray that is a sliding fit within the sleeve.

The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sleeve of the preferred container.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the inner tray of the preferred container, and Figure 3 is a lateral cross-section of the member 2.

The preferred container comprises a sleeve 1 and a tray member 2, either or both of which may be made of plastic material. The sleeve 1 is formed with two inwardly projecting lips 1' for retaining tray member 2, when outwardly projecting lips 4 locate, the sleeve being dimensioned so as to be a sliding fit over the tray.

These outward projecting lips 4 on members 2 are so designed that they are sprung loaded as extensions of 2' which are cutaways of the tray but held at one end.

When tray 2 is pushed into sleeve 1 outwardly sprung loaded lips 4 locate into inwardly projecting lips 1'. Any attempt to push tray member 2 out of sleeve would be in vain.

When it is desired to remove tray 2, one would have to press pressure points 3 on sleeve, which in turn would act on tray member 2, at point 3' causing side 2' to be deflected inwardly thus causing lips 4 to be removed from inward projecting lips 1' allowing free movement of tray member 2.

It would be advantageous to have tray member 2 operating one-way so as to ensure lips 4 stay within sleeve when withdrawing tray to expose contents.

1. A child-resistant container comprising a sleeve having openings at both ends, and a tray that is a sliding fit within the sleeve.

2. A container as claimed in 1, in which there are provided in the sleeve means for securing a receptacle in place in the sleeve.

3. A container as claimed in 1, in which there are provided in the tray means for securing against sleeve.

4. A container as claimed in 1, 2, 3, in which the sleeve and tray each have a rectangular cross-section.

5. A container as claimed in 1, 2, 3, in which the sleeve and tray may have many variations on shape.

6. A child resistant container substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

7. A matchbox comprising a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims and a conventional matchbox.
