Abstract

A beverage dispense nozzle 1 comprises a central spout 22 to provide a syrup stream and jets 29 arranged there about to project water toward the stream 5. The syrup and water mix in-stream and above a cup (3, Figure 1) into which the mixed beverage is dispensed. The jets 29 are preferably angled at 10 DEG to the syrup flow direction and the central spout may be connected to a bag in a box source of syrup. <IMAGE>

Description

Beverage Dispense Nozzle The present invention relates to a beverage dispense nozzle and more particularly to a beverage dispense nozzle for post-mix beverages where fruit juice and potable water are combined to form the beverage drink.
Previously, beverage dispense nozzles have been known constructed of respective jetting arrangements for syrup and potable or carbonated water wherein the syrup and water are mixed in a cup or other receptacle. One such nozzle is illustrated in United States Patent Number 5000357 (ABC/Sebrn Tech Corp. Inc). The mixing process is conducted in the receptacle to reduce foaming and further foam supression may be achieved by causing the syrup and water to become incident upon crushed ice.
Conventionally, in these previous beverage dispense nozzles the syrup has been jetted through a central honey comb of outlets to ensure controlled and well regulated flow whilst the water has either been jetted in a similar fashion or sprayed upon a nozzle collar wall to drip into the cup. This approach to mixing the syrup and water leads to severe stratification of the final drink. It will be understood that the syrup is usually chilled and thus, is quite viscous with the result that the syrup is 'heavier' than the water and so remains at the bottom of the receptacle. Furthermore, chilled water is not best suited for mixing with a viscous syrup. Finally, these previous beverage nozzle types require a great deal of maintenance and cleaning to ensure they remain hygenic due to the number of 'bug traps' or dead spots in the central outlet honeycomb where syrup can collect. There is a requirement to mix fruit juice concentrate with water to form a post-mixed fruit juice drink. The concentrate acts in a simular manner to syrup however, it may have a high pulp factor, that is to say fruit solids etc. This pulp evidently presents even greater hygiene problems.
It is an objective of the present invention to provide a beverage dispense nozzle that substantially relieves these problems.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a beverage dispense nozzle for dispensing syrup and water comprising a central spout arranged to project syrup and a plurality of water jets arranged about the central spout arranged to project water upon syrup that passes through that spout whereby the syrup and water are mixed in stream.
Preferably, the water jets are concentric about the central spout.
Preferably, the central spout is coupled to a 'bag-in-box' type syrup source. The whole spout/syrup source being a replaceable and either reuseable or a disposable unit.
Preferably, the water jets are angled at 100 to the syrup flow.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with respect to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of a beverage dispense nozzle and Figure 2 is a more detailed cross-sectional representation of the same.
Referring to the drawing. A nozzle assembly 1 is arranged in a housing above a cup or receptacle 3.
The nozzle assembly 1 upon activation of a beverage dispense system (not show) dispenses a syrup or concentrate stream 5 and a plurality of water streams 7. The syrup stream 5 and water streams 7 are arranged to coincide in a mixing zone 9 above the receptacle 3. This mixing zone 9 is achieved by angling the water streams 7 with respect to a central syrup stream 5. The water stream angle is conveniently 10 to the vertical syrup stream 5. The position of the mixing zone 9 is thus dependent upon this water stream angle however, it is important that the syrup and water are adequately mixing to avoid stratification in the drink. A common problem in previous nozzle systems where the water and syrup are not mixed until encountering the receptacle 3 or ice held therein.
Generally, the syrup stream 5 is jetted by a simple tube thus eliminating any possibility of creating dead spots where syrup can congregate to creat hygiene problems. This tube is most conveniently connected directly to a 'bag-in-box' source of syrup or fruit concentrate or could be an integral disposable assembly. Additionally, by appropriate sizing of the tube dimension a droplet of syrup or concentrate can be held upon the end during periods of in-activity further reducing the prospects for contamination.
In Figure 2, the nozzle assembly 1 is illustrated in greater detail. The assembly 1 comprises a nozzle element 21 configured to allow accommodation of a water collar 23 and syrup/concentrate coupler 25. The water collar 23 includes inlets 27 to which a water supply (not shown) is connected. The coupler 25 may be connected directly to a 'bag-in-box' type supply of syrup. The syrup is jetted through a port 22. Evidently, both the water streams 7 and syrup stream 5 are usually propelled or jetted using some form of pump. If a peristaltic pump is used the pulsing action of the pump on the syrup or juice concentrate is dampened by the impinging water streams 7.
The inlets 27 channel water towards a plurality of sprinkler jets 29 arranged to spray the water towards syrup passing through the nozzle assembly 1.
The nozzle assembly 1 can be constructed as illustrated in Figure 2 of component parts 21, 23 and 25 or as an integral moulding.
The sprinkler jets 29 are conveniently concentric and equally spaced about the syrup spout 22 although other arrangements to suit syrup types flow rates etc could be possible. Furthermore, it will be appreciated that sprinkler jets 29 of varying diameter or angle could be used to enhance in stream mixing of water with the syrup.
