Abstract
An indicator light set to be used on bicycles. It contains three front light segments, one for night use and two for front right and left direction indication(s). There are also three rear light segments, one for night use combined with brake light in between two rear right and left direction indication lights. Both pairs of direction indication lights are controlled by a three-way position switch fitted on the either side of the handle-bars. It can be operated by either thumb. The application of brakes are sensed by microswitches fitted on the brake mechanisms or on the brake levers. <IMAGE>
Description
BICYCLE INDICATOR LIGHT SET
Technical : This invention relates to direction indication and brake lights to
Field be used on bicycles.
Background: Indicating change of direction by raising an arm when cycling
can sometimes be very dangerous due to adverse weather and
road conditions. If cyclists were able to indicate their intention
to change direction to other road users while keeping both
hands on the handle-bars this would result in the riders
remaining in total control of their cycles.
Essential
Technical
Features
The indicator light set presented benefits from the use of Ultra
Bright LEDs that consume very little current , they are mall,
lightweight and can withstand the vibrations which bicycles
are normally subjected to. The application of the brakes are sensed by microswitches which can be fitted on brake levers or on the brake mechanisms. The direction indication switch is a 3 position lever or rocker switch that can be fitted on either side of the handle-bars and be operated by either thumb. All lighting segments of the system are unplugable leaving ony the wiring and the switches permenantly fitted on the bicycle.
Description: The system contains four main parts:
1- Front assembly : which contain three light segments
Front night light and front right and left indicator lights. This
part contains the electronics and the batteries for the system.
2- Rear assembly : which also contains three light segments
Rear night light combined with brake light in between
the two rear indicator light-segments.
3- Cable and switches assembly : This is a multicore cable to
be attached to the chassis of the bike and connects all
switches to the front and rear assemblies, and it is terminated
with waterproof fly sockets to which front and rear lights are
to be plugged.
4- Brackets :Two brackets are to be permanently mounted, one
in front and one at the back of the bike on which the two
lighting assemblies are to be fitted when in use.
Figure 1 page 5/1 shows the front assembly, its bracket and
its connection plug and socket.
The following parts are shown in the diagram :
1 - Front assembly bracket.
2 - Front night light and it contains the batteries for the system
and the oscillator for the indicating lights segments.
3 - Front left indicator light
4 - Front right indicator light.
5 - Front assembly plug.
6 - Front assembly socket.
7 - Cable assembly.
8 - Cableclip.
9 - Night light switch which operates both front and rear lights.
Parts 10 and 11 are rear viewing mirrors.
Figure 2 page 5/2 showes the rear assembly and its
connection plug and socket.
The following parts are showen on the diagram:
12 - Rear right indicator light.
13 - Rear night light combined with brake light.
14 - Rear left indicator light.
15 - Rear assembly plug.
16 - rear assembly bracket.
17 - Rear assembly socket.
Figure 3 page 513 showes the indicator lights switch (part 18)
which is a three-way position rocker switch. It is connected
directly to the cable assembly and remains permanently fitted
on the handle-bars.
Figure 4 part 19 is one of two microswitches which may be
attached to the brake mechanism to sense the application of
the brakes. Either one or both switches when applied switches
on the brake light. The circuit diagram shown on page 5/4 contains the follwowing items : D1 - Front left indicator LEDs.
D2 - Front night light LEDs.
D3 - Front left indicator LEDs.
D4 - Rear left indicator LEDs.
D5 - Brake light LEDs.
D6 - Rear right indicator LEDs.
D7 - Rear night light LEDs.
S1 - Night light switch.
S2 and S3 - Brake sensing microswitches.
S4 - Right and left indicator switch.
20 - The indicator lights driver oscillator.
The circuit describes how the oscillator (part20) may drive either the right indicator light segments or the left ones thrsugh indicator light switch (S4 ) It also describes how either brake microswitches (S2 or S3) can activate the brake light D5. Night light switch (S1) is used to switch both front and rear night lights (D2 and D7) respectively.
Claims (1)
1 - A bicycle indicator light set comprising of three front light segments, one for night use and two for right and left direction indication, a set of three light segments fitted at the back of the bicycle, one for night use and two for direction indication and an additional bright red light which is combined with the rear night light to indicate the application of the brake.
2 - A bicycle indicator light set as in claim one that benifits from the use of
Light Emitting Diodes for low power consumption.
3 - A bicycle indicator light set as in claims one or two in which the ccntrol of the direction indicatation lights is by a three-way position switch fitted on the handle-bars.
4 - A bicycle indicator light set as in claims one or two in which brake light is activated by means of microswitches fitted on the brake mechanisms or on the brake levers to sense the application of the brakes.
