Abstract

A child's vehicle seat (10) comprises a base portion (12) and a back portion (14). The portions (12, 14) are releasably secured together by two lengths of webbing (16, 18). Each of the portions (12, 14) can be used independently of the other. For example, the base portion (12) can be used alone as a booster cushion, and the back portion (14) can be used alone as a back support. <IMAGE>

Description

The present invention relates to child's vehicle seat which can be used in conjunction with a vehicle seat equipped with an adult sized safety belt.
The present invention seeks to provide a child's vehicle seat comprising at least a base and back portion releasably secured together.
The present invention further seeks to provide a child's vehicle seat in which the base or the back portions can be used independently of each other, or together as a unit to form a complete seat.
Accordingly the present invention provides a child's vehicle seat comprising at least two portions, one of said portions comprising a base and the other one of said portions comprising a back, the two portions being releasably secured together, and at least one of said portions being usable independently of the other said portion.
The portions can be releasably secured together by at least one length of webbing which extends through respective openings in each of the portions, the ends of the length of webbing having securing means to prevent movement of the free ends relative to the vehicle seat.
The portions can be secured together by two lengths of webbing.
The securing means of the lengths of webbing can comprise a first buckle to which one end of each length of webbing is secured, and a second buckle positioned between the ends of each webbing length to which the other end of the webbing length is securable.
The opening or openings in the base, can be positioned towards the rear of the base, and the opening or openings in the back portion are located towards the lower edge of the back portion.
The buckle of the securing means can be located in a recess in the undersurface of the base portion.
The present invention will now be more particulary described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which, Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of one form of a child's vehicle seat according to the present invention, Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of part of the vehicle seat shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows a view on arrow A in Fig. 2, Fig. 4 shows a view on arrow B in Fig. 2, Fig 5. shows a side elevation of the back portion of the vehicle seat shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the seat and and adult seat belt, together with a belt adjuster, Fig. 7 is a view of the guide clip in Fig. 6, Fig. 8 shows a modified form of child's vehicle seat according to the present invention, Fig. 9 shows a side elevation of the back of the seat shown in Fig. 8 and, Fig. 10 is a view on arrow A in Fig. 9.
Referring to the Figs. 1 to 5, a child's vehicle seat 10 comprises a base portion 12 and a back portion 14.
The two portions 12 and 14 are releasably secured together by securing means comprising two lengths of webbing 16 and 18. Each length of webbing 16 and 18 terminates in a loop, only one of which 16A is shown. The loop 16A is attached to a buckle 20 which is located in a recess 22 in the undersurface of the base portion 12.
The webbing length 16 passes through an opening 24 towards the rear of the base portion 12, around the outersurface of the base portion 12, through a second buckle 26, through the first buckle 20, back through the opening 24, and then through an opening 28, which is located towards the lower end of the back portion 14.
The webbing length then passes over the back and underneath the seat portion 16, and free end 16B of the webbing length passes through the second buckle 26.
The webbing length 18 has buckles corresponding to the buckles 20 and 26, and is passed over and through the seat and back portions in a manner similar to the webbing length 16.
It would be appreciated that when both webbing lengths are positioned and tensioned as shown in Fig. 2, the seat portions 16 and 18 are firmly secured together.
In this assembled form the child's vehicle seat 10 is positioned on a vehicle seat, and the child user together with the seat is held in position by the normal adult size seat belt.
Referring to Fig. 6 which shows the seat 10 secured in position by an adult seat belt 30, having a lap portion 30A and a diagonal portion 308. The seat belt 30 includes a buckle 32 which is attachable to a stem 34 of the seat belt 30. The stem 34 is anchored at 36 to the vehicle structure. The position of the diagonal portion with respect to the user can be adjusted by means of a belt adjuster 38, which comprises a webbing length 40 having a loop 42 at one end which passes over the stem 34. A guide clip 44 shown in more detail in Fig. 7, is attached to the other end of the webbing length 40 and the webbing length 40 passes around the back of the seat 10. The guide clip 44 hooks onto the diagonal portion 308 to adjust the height of the diagonal portion with respect to the user. The guide clip 44 has a clamp 46 to lock the guide clip in position on the diagonal portion.
Referring now to Figs. 8, 9 and 10, which includes a modified form of belt adjuster 48 which is attached to the back 14 of the seat 10.
The belt adjuster comprises a webbing length 50 terminating in a guide clip 44 as shown in Fig. 7. The webbing length 50 passes through an opening in the back 14, and co-operates with a buckle 52 which is located in a recess 54 on the rear face of the back 14. The buckle 52 has slots 56 through which the webbing length 50 is threaded, so as to prevent relative movement between the webbing length 50 and the buckle 52, and maintain the length of the belt adjuster 48 constant.
The base portion 12 can be used on its own as a booster cushion, and the portion 12 and 14 are released one from the other by releasing the free ends 168 from the respective buckles 26, and pulling away the back portion 14 from the base portion 12. The free ends 168 are wrapped around the base 12, and are attached to their respective buckles 26, in this configuration, the webbing lengths 16 assist in maintaining the integrity of the base portion 12 in the event of impact.
In this configuration the child user sits on the base portion 12, which raises the child user to a height appropriate to the adult sized seat belt, so that the adult seat belt passes over the users shoulder at the correct location.
Means not shown, such as a retaining strap can be used to restrain movement of the base portion 12.
Alternatively, the back portion 14 can be used independently of the base portion 12, and can also have retaining means independent of the seat belt, to hold the back portion against movement.
The base portion 12 is provided with arms 12A for the comfort of the user, and to restrain lateral movement of the user on the base portion.
Similarly the back portion 14 has wings 14A to restrain lateral movement of the user.
Whilst the securing means for holding the seat and back portions releasably secured together comprise two webbing lengths, only one webbing length maybe necessary. Also other releasably securing means can be provided, and the invention is not restricted to the use of one or more webbing lengths and associated buckles and clips.
