Abstract

An implement for picking up food, such as may be cooking on a barbeque or as may be on display in a butchers, comprises a handle (1), a single elongate member (2), a curved portion (4) remote from the handle (1), a point (3) on the end of the curved portion (4), and a stop member (5). The curved portion is part-circular or part-helical and extends for substantially half a turn. The point and curved portion are driven into meat to be handled with a half-turn of the wrist in one direction until the stop portion prevents further rotation of the implement. The meat is then hooked for handling. To release the meal the implement is given a had turn in the opposite direction. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPLEMENT FOR PICKING UP FOOD This invention relates to an implement for picking up food, and especially but not exclusively to an implement for turning food cooking under a grill or on a barbecue, and to an implement for picking up large joints of meat, for example in a butchers.
The normal implement used for picking up food on a barbeque is a pair of tongs, which have the advantage of not piercing the food, so that all juices are fully retained, but can be unsatisfactory to use, especially for large items which may be difficult to grip properly. An alternative is to use a fork, which grips items more firmly, but can then be difficult to release once the item has been turned over. Using a fork has the further disadvantage of piercing the food, thus allowing the juices to run out.
According to the present invention, an implement for picking up food has a handle, to which is attached a single elongate member having at the end remote from the handle a point for inserting into the food, and adjacent the point a curved portion of part-circular or part-helical outline, and a stop member.
The implement is used with a twisting movement, so that the point and curved portion are inserted in to the food, which is held firmly by the curved portion and the stop member. The food is released easily however by a reverse twisting movement. The implement therefore makes it easy to pick up and to turn food.
Although it pierces the food, it makes only a single small hole, which will not affect the food substantially.
Preferably, the stop member is formed by a part of the elongate member adjacent the curved portion.
Conveniently the stop member comprises a part of the elongate member formed substantially perpendicular to the portion extending from the handle. Preferably, the point of the elongate member is flattened. The elongate member may be of metal, or coated metal. When the curved portion is part-circular the stop member may comprise a straight rod portion of the elongate member from which the part-circular member extends in a plane normal to the rod portion, or the stop member may comprise the junction between the rod portion and the curved portion.
Embodiments of the invention are illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, ir: which: Figure 1 is a side view of an implement for picking up food; Figure 2 is a view in the direction of the arrow of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of another implement for picking up food; and Figure 4 is a view in the direction of the arrow of Figure 3.
The implement shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a handle 1, to which is attached a single elongate member 2 whose end remote from the handle 1 has a point 3 for insertion into food, a part-helical portion 4 and a stop member 5. The implement is suitable for light-duty work such as for use at a barbecue.
The handle 1 is of a suitable material, preferably wood or plastics, while the elongate member 2 is of metal, such as steel. The two are attached by a hollow frusto-conical metal member 6, fixed to the member 2, and adapted to engage round a forward portion 7 of the handle 1.
The elongate member 2 comprises a rod of circular cross-section, and approximately 3mm in diameter. Most of its length is made up of a straight part 8, with the point 3, part-helical portion 4 and stop member 5 being formed from the rod at the end remote from the handle 1. The stop member 5 comprises a semi-circular rod portion lying in a plane which is substantially perpendicular to the straight part 8. The portion 4 is formed by approximately a quarter turn of a helix, and is at about 450 to the straight part 8. The portion 4 terminates in the point 3, which is flattened.
In use, the handle 1 is held by the operator, and the point 3 is inserted into an item of food, with a twisting movement which results in the point 3 and portion 4 going into the item until the stop member 5 engages the surface of the item. The item is then held firmly by the portion 4 and the stop member 5, and can be picked up, and transferred elsewhere, or turned over. The item is released by a reverse twisting movement which withdraws the portion 4 and point 3.
The implement is very easy to use, and can hold firmly heavy items, such as steaks or chops, so that it is easy to manoeuvre them on a barbecue or grill.
In modification, not shown, the stop member 5 may have a different construction. For example, the semi-circular rod portion may be omitted, to make the straight part 8 dnd portion 4 of the rod adjacent, the stop member then comprising a separate disc or similar member attached to the rod at an appropriate point.
Figures 3 and 4 show another implement for heavy duty use by butchers. The implement comprises a plastics handle 10, an elongate member 12, a curved portion 14 comprising a part-circular portion extending directly from a straight end region 18 of the elongate member 12 in a plane which is normal to the straight end region 18, and a point 13 provided at the end of the part-circular curved portion 14. The point 13 is flattened. The elongate member 12 may be of metal or coated metal. The region where the curved portion 14 joins the end region 18 forms a stop member 15. The curved portion 14 comprises substantially half a turn (1800).
The implement is used in a similar way to that of Figures 1 and 2 and can hold firmly heavy items such as steaks, chickens, or legs of meat (such as lamb). The use of the implement enables a butcher to manoeuvre and manipulate meat on display without touching it with his hands.
It will be appreciated that the curved portion need not be precisely part-circular; it could be part-ovoid, or any other suitable curved shape.
