Abstract

A tamper evident cardboard container has an outer closure flap (2) which overlies a pair of inner closure flaps (6), the outer closure flap having a detachable portion (3) secured across the inner closure flaps so as to detach and remain secured to the latter when the outer flap is opened. The inner flaps are then opened by tearing across the detachable portion. The container may be formed from a blank which is folded and glued together.

Description

"Containers" This invention relates to containers made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material.
Such containers are often required to be"tamper evident", that is to have a feature which makes it clear to a user if the container has already been opened, but which still enables the user to reclose the container once he himself has opened it in the normal way. The present invention is concerned with an improved container of this kind.
According to the invention there is provided a container made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, having an outer closure panel which overlies an inner closure panel, the said outer closure panel having a detachable portion which is secured to the said inner closure panel in such a manner as to detach and remain secured to the latter if the outer closure panel is opened, the detached portion then obstructing opening of the said inner closure panel.
With such an arrangement it is doubly evident to a user if the container has already been opened, as not only it will be evident that the outer closure panel has been opened, by virtue of the said detachable portion having been detached therefrom, but it will also be evident that the inner closure panel has been opened, by virtue of the removal of the obstruction presented by the detached portion.
The said detachable portion of the outer closure panel may be associated with the panel in any convenient manner. Preferably it is a part of the body of the panel, defined by one or more lines of weakness therein, such as a row of cuts separated by narrow lands.
As already stated, the said detachable portion obstructs opening of the inner closure panel. This may be achieved by securing the detachable portion both to the inner closure panel and to another part of the container. Preferably the detachable portion has a line of weakness therein to facilitate separation of the inner closure panel from the said other part.
Preferably the said other part of the container is a second inner closure panel. The first and second inner closure panels may then comprise a pair of inner closure flaps abutting at their edges, the said detachable portion being secured across such edges. The aforementioned line of weakness in the detachable portion may then overlie the line of abutment between the closure flaps.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a cardboard blank for making a container according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of one (openable) end of the erected container, in its closed condition; and Figures 3 and 4 are views similar to Figure 2 but showing the container in partially and fully opened conditions respectively.
Referring first to Figure 1, a cardboard blank 1 for forming an elongate, tubular, square section carton is of an entirely conventional nature with the one exception that a tuck-in outer closure flap 2 at one end of the blank is formed with an oval detachable portion 3 defined by a line of weakness in the form of a line of cuts 4 separated by narrow lands. A further line of weakness comprising a line of cuts 5 bisects the detachable portion, for a purpose to be explained below.
A pair of inner closure flaps are shown at 6.
The carton is intended to be opened by way of the flaps 2 and 6. Consequently, when the carton is erected, the closure flaps 7 at the other end are glued closed. At the openable end, however, having folded in the inner closure flaps 6, the outer closure flap 2 is tucked in and at the same its detachable portion 3 is glued to both of the inner closure flaps as indicated at 8 in Figures 2 and 3.
Referring now particularly to Figures 3 and 4, when the outer closure flap 2 is opened, because its detachable portion 3 is firmly glued to the inner closure flaps 6, it detaches from the flap 2 and is left behind, secured to the flaps 6. The latter flaps are then opened by tearing along the line of cuts 5 in the portion 3.
It will thus be seen that the carton is doubly tamper evident in that, if it has previously been opened, this is clear firstly from the fact that the portion 3 has been detached from the flap 2, and secondly in that the portion 3 has been broken along the line 5. The tamper evident structure could be provided at both ends of the carton if desired. The detachable portion 3 could be of any other desired shape instead of oval. It is not necessary for the outer closure flap 2 to have a tuck-in tab as shown.

Claims (11)

  1. Claims: 1. A container made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, having an outer closure panel which overlies an inner closure panel, the said outer closure panel having a detachable portion which is secured to the said inner closure panel in such a manner as to detach and remain secured to the latter if the outer closure panel is opened, the detached portion then obstructing opening of the said inner closure panel.
  2. 2. A container as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said detachable portion is a part of the body of the said outer closure panel.
  3. 3. A container as claimed in claim 2, wherein the said detachable portion is defined by at least one line of weakness in the outer closure panel.
  4. 4. A container as claimed in claim 3, wherein said at least one line of weakness is a row of cuts separated by narrow lands.
  5. 5. A container as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the said detachable portion is secured both to the said inner closure panel and to another part of the container so as to obstruct opening of the inner closure panel.
  6. 6. A container as claimed in claim 5, wherein the said detachable portion has a line of weakness therein to facilitate separation of the said inner closure flap from the said other part.
  7. 7. A container as claimed in claim 5 or 6, wherein the said other part of the container is a second inner closure panel.
  8. 8. A container as claimed in claim 7, wherein the first and second inner closure panels comprise a pair of inner closure flaps abutting at their edges, the said detachable portion being secured across such edges.
  9. 9. A container as claimed in claims 6 and 8, wherein the said line of weakness in the detachable portion overlies the line of abutment between the said closure flaps.
  10. 10. A container as claimed in claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
  11. 11. A blank for making a container as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10.
