Abstract
A glazed roof R having a glass area 2 comprises a sheet member 10 which is at least partially transparent and has heat reflective properties and is disposed generally parallel to the glazed roof R. Preferably the sheet member 10 is disposed above the glazed area 2 and may form an air gap. The sheet member may be self supporting and may be attached at its edges to a mounting member 1 by which the glass area 2 is attached to the roof. The sheet member 10 may comprise a plastics sheet, e.g. polycarbonate, and have metal particles disposed on one side. A protective layer may be applied to the metallised surface.

invention relates to the provision of solar reflective properties to roof glazing.
In one aspect the invention provides a glazed roof having a glass area characterised by a sheet member which is at least partially transparent and has heat reflective properties and is disposed generally parallel to the glazed area.
The sheet member may be placed above or below the glazing and may be in direct contact with the glazing or spaced at a distance from the glazing. The sheet member may be self supporting or connected to a support. The connection can be made in a variety of ways, for example:
by adhering or affixing the sheet direct to a glazing or glazing bead by the use of suitable fixings, or a mastic or adhesive which can be in a polymerisable or nonpolymerisable form, e.g. a silicone; by the attachment to the roof supports, or external or internal glazing beads, or cappings to which the sheet members of the invention can be connected; by reception of an edge of the sheet member in a glazing bead or capping using slots, fixings clips, or the like; 2 by temporary or permanent fixings either applied to the roof material direct or to the glazing bead, roof supports or cappings; by attaching a battening or bead, as a temporary or permanent fixing either direct to the glazing or to the internal or external glazing bead or internal or external roof support to create a space between the sheet and the glazing.
These methods apply where the sheet member is sufficiently rigid to be self-supporting. The member can be in the form of a film sufficiently flexible not to be self-supporting, in which case it can be suspended above or below the glazing and held taut above the glazing by attachments to the roof supports.
The sheet is preferably spaced by a distance from the glazing either internally or externally to obtain maximum winter insulation performance. This improved insulation can result from a combination of the presence of an air gap and also the winter heat reflecting properties of the heat reflecting metals.
The connection of the sheet member is preferably made to the outside of the glazing to exclude the maximum solar heat. In this case the sheet member acts as a heat reflector to intercept the heat before it enters the space below the glazed area.
A heat reflecting layer can be metalised directly onto a plastics sheet in which case it is preferable to have a protective surface applied to the metallised surface. This can be a clear, translucent, or coloured lacquer, transparent paint, or transparent laminate, plastic film or the like.
3 The heat reflecting properties can be incorporated by bonding a heat reflecting laminate to a surface of a plastics sheet. Although a laminate with a virgin heat reflective surface can be applied with the adhesive (to bond it to the plastic sheet) applied directly to the virgin metal surface, it may be preferable to apply a laminate which is of a sandwich construction where the metal is protected.
Where the sheet is used externally it is preferably to have the heat reflecting surface facing downwards and protected from the weather by the plastic substrate sheet. However, if it is necessary to locate the heat reflectors outwards suitable lacquers, paints and laminates are available which are 'weatherable', may be applied to the exposed surface.
Additional solar heat reflection and winter insulation performance can be obtained using laminates with low heat emitting surfaces.
Preferably the sheet member comprises a sheet of polycarbonate, polyester, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride, acrylic, polyvinyl fluoride, polyethylene or the like having metal particles on one side thereof to provide heat reflective properties. The laminate having heat reflective properties may be bonded to one side of the sheet member. A protective layer may be applied to the metallised surface. Preferably the protective layer is a lacquer, paint, laminate or plastic film.
The glazed area may comprise glass or polycarbonate, acrylic or any other transparent plastic in the form of single or multiple glazing units made from panels of glass or plastic, or to hollow cellular glazing structures such as those used in twin wall or 4 multiple walled polycarbonate, acrylic or other roof structures. The area may be at or near a valley gutter, a hip or near exterior building walls.
Figure 1 illustrates diagramatically a sequence of steps in mounting a sheet member above a glazed roof; Figure 2 illustrates different means for holding the sheet member in place; Figures 3 and 4 are cross sectional views of different sheet members.
A roof R has two vertical supports I projecting above a glazed area 2. Two shelves 3 are present on the opposite comer face of the supports to define a channel like slot 4 and to receive an edge portion of a relatively rigid sheet member 10. This may be formed from acrylic having a metallised laminate bonded to its lower surface. The underside of the shelves is spaced from the glazed area by a short distance 5 to define a heat insulating gap. In use, the sheet 10 is slid between the shelves 3 to cover the glazed area.
Figure 2 shows a variety of capping members at one side of a roof of the invention. In the embodiment of Figures 2A and 213, a rubber like member 21, 22, holds the sheet member in place; the latter has a slot to receive the edge portion of the sheet member.
In embodiments C and D, the cap member 23, 24 fits on top of the roof support and is held there by adhesive or screws, not shown. The member has a side extension to hold the sheet member.
The cap member 25 has a foot 26 to be received in a hole formed in the top of the roof support 1. The edge of the sheet member 10 fits in the gap between the cap member and the top of the roof support.
The cap member 27 of embodiment F has a spring element to engage the top of the sheet member.
In embodiment G the cap member 28 has a vacuum adherent head and foot and is present between the glazed area 2 and the underside of the sheet member 10.
In embodiment H a sheet member 2 is simply connected by adhesive 29 to the top of a cap member.
One sheet member is shown in Figure 3 and is made up of a top layer 101 which is the external surface and may be PVC, PVF, acrylic, polycarbonate polyester with stabiliser; or the like layer 102 - an adhesive which may be pressure sensitive or polymerised; layer 103 which is a transparent film such as a polyester, polypropylene, polycarbonate, acrylic, PVF polycarbonate or the like; layer 104 which is an adhesive; 6 layer 105 which is a transparent film having a metallised surface layer; layer 106 which is a transparent film and acts as a support.
The sheet member of Figure 4 is made up of fewer layers to provide a rigid sheet of partially or wholly transparent plastics.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments shown. The sheet member may be applied to vertical glazing and indeed the roof need not be truly horizontal as in a skylight. The man skilled in the art will be able to select materials and dimensions according to the heat reflection or insulation properties required by the circumstances.

Claims (12)
1. A glazed roof having a glass area characterised by a sheet member which is at least partially transparent and has heat reflective properties and is disposed generally parallel to the glazed roof
2. A roof according to Claim 1, wherein the sheet member is disposed above the glazed area.
3. A roof according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the sheet member is vertically spaced from the glazed area to provide an air gap.
4. A roof according to any preceding claim, wherein the sheet member is sufficiently rigid to be self supporting.
5. A roof according to any preceding Claim, wherein the sheet member is attached at its edges to a mounting member by which the glass area is attached to the roof proper.
6. A roof according to Claim 5, wherein channel members are present on the roof mounting members and the sheet member is engaged therewith.
7. A roof according to any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the sheet member is secured to the mounting member by an adhesive.
8 8. A roof according to any preceding Claim, including a batten to hold the sheet member on to the glazed roof.
9. A roof according to any preceding Claim wherein the sheet member comprises a sheet selected from the materials specified herein.
10. A roof according to any of Claims I to 8 wherein a laminate having heat reflective properties is bonded to one side of the sheet member.
11. A roof according to Claim 9 or 10 wherein a protective layer is applied to the metallised surface.
12. A roof according to Claim 9 or 10 wherein the protective layer is a lacquer, paint laminate or plastic film.
