Abstract
Aluminous materials such as shales, fireclay, blaes and the like which do not disintegrate during leaching are broken up to pass a sieve of 36 to 64 square meshes per square inch and a large proportion of fines, i.e. 40-50 per cent passing a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch, and are then leached on a false bottom in a leaching vessel without separating the fines. The solution obtained is submitted to a settling process at a concentration of 55-65 DEG Tw., and the clear liquid is then concentrated and crystallized. The false bottom is preferably placed as high as possible in the leaching vessel, for instance so as to have 2-3 feet depth of liquid below it and a few inches of liquid above it, so as to avoid choking the outlet pipe. Any kind of leaching process may be employed, for instance a single quantity of acid may be used or successive quantities of acid, or a counter-current process in which a fresh charge is first treated with nearly neutralized liquor and the nearly exhausted charge with fresh acid.
