Abstract
A flame retardant coating for inter alia a wall, the coating comprising a combination of a blowing agent, a charring agent, a plasticising agent, a dispersing agent, a coalescing agent, a vinyl acetate dispersion, a biocide, a defoaming agent acrylic co-polymer dispersion, a biocide, a defoaming agent, ammonia, a flame retardant ingredient, and a acrylic associative thickener, whereby the acrylic associative thickener has a dispersion of more than 50% solids in water.
Description
<p>FIRE RETARDANT COATING</p>
<p>The present invention relates to fire retardant coating, for use for example on walls of a building.</p>
<p>It has long been important to continue to find more efficient ways to provide fire proofing to internal walls of buildings. The present invention seeks to provide a coating that is used in the normal way to coat internal walls of a building whereby the composition of the coating itself has fire retardant properties.</p>
<p>According to a first aspect there is provided, a flame retardant coating for inter al/a a wall, the coating comprising a combination of a blowing agent, a charring agent, a plasticising agent, a dispersing agent, a coalescing agent, a vinyl acetate dispersion, a biocide, a defoaming agent acrylic co-polymer dispersion, a biocide, a defoaming agent, ammonia, a flame retardant ingredient, and a acrylic associative thickener, whereby I...</p>
<p>the acrylic associative thickener has a dispersion of more than 5O% solids in water. * * S * S * I..</p>
<p>Preferably, the coating further comprises allumina silicate powder. * S. S 5</p>
<p>Preferably still, the coating further comprises a water proofing agent.</p>
<p>According to a second aspect there is provided a block of timber or timber-related material on which is applied, on at least one surface of the block, a flame retardant coating according to the first aspect.</p>
<p>The composition of the paste will now be described.</p>
<p>The paste comprises a plurality of different constituents, the combination of which, numerous experiments by the applicant have shown, provides a coating which provides an effective barrier in the event of a fire.</p>
<p>The constituents, and the order in which they are mixed, are as follows -a blowing agent, for example melamine (15.000 kg); -a charring agent, for example pentaerythritol (15.000 kg); -tap water (13.500 kg); - a flame retardant component such as an ammonium polyphosphate phase 2, for example Exolit App 422 (dispersed in water) (36.000 kg); -tap water (13.500 kg); -a plasticising agent such as chloraparaffin 521 (6.000 kg); -a pigment, for example a white pigment such as titanium dioxide R003 (6.000 kg); -a defoaming agent such as a parafinic liquid/mineral oil, for example Octafoam (0.600 kg); ---a biocide, for example, acticide CH9636 (0.250 kg); -a phosphate, dispersing agent to disperse the exolate surfactant, e for example surfac K18 (0.300 kg); -methyl ethyl glycol (MEG) (0.300 kg); -a dispersing agent to disperse the pigment, such as a carboxylate in aqueous solution, for example eccodis 80 (0.360 kg); -tap water (7.000 kg) -an acrylic associative thickener, for example Rheovis 132, in liquid form) (2.300 kg); -a vinyl acetate dispersion/vovea copolymer, for example emultex 523 (15.000 kg).</p>
<p>Rheovis 132 is included in the mixture because it has a high solid ratio (around 60% of acrylic polymer dispersed in water) which reduces the shipping costs associated with a thickener having a higher water content.</p>
<p>Ground allumina silicate may be added to the mixture to provide increased insulation to the char which improves the flame retardancy and overall efficiency of the coating.</p>
<p>The coating has particular use as a coating applied to blocks of timber or timber-related material. In particular the coating can be applied to timber panels and blocks being used in the construction of buildings.</p>
<p>To prevent leaching of the coating, it is preferred that the coating is applied to timber that is not susceptible to shrinkage or swelling, such as timber supplied and used by Cape Cod and described in associated patents. * *** ***.</p>
<p>It is envisaged that the coating could also be applied to forms of wood, including but not limited to plywood, chipboard and MDF.</p>

<p>Application of the coating provides the timber supplied with at least 30 :.:::. minutes fire protection which is becoming increasingly required in the timber building construction industry.</p>
<p>A water proofing agent such as an acrylic dispersion, for example Primal LT, may be added to the mixture to further avoid leaching of the coating when wood on which the coating is applied shrinks.</p>
<p>The above described embodiments are given by way of example only, and the skilled reader will naturally appreciate that many variations could be made thereto without departing from the scope of the present invention.</p>
Claims (1)
- <p>CLAIMS</p><p>1. A flame retardant coating for inter a/ía a wall, the coating comprising a combination of a blowing agent, a charring agent, a plasticising agent, a dispersing agent, a coalescing agent, a vinyl acetate dispersion, a biocide, a defoaming agent acrylic co-polymer dispersion, a biocide, a defoaming agent, ammonia, a flame retardant ingredient, and a acrylic associative thickener, whereby the acrylic associative thickener has a dispersion of more than 50% solids in water.</p><p>2. A flame retardant coating as claimed in claim 1 wherein the coating further comprises allumina silicate powder.</p><p>3. A flame retardant coating as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the coating further comprises a water proofing agent.</p><p>4. A flame retardant coating comprising; a blowing agent, for example melamine (15.000 kg); -a charring agent, for example pentaerythritol (15.000 kg); -tap water (13.500 kg); -a flame retardant component such as an ammonium polyphosphate phase 2, for example Exolit App 422 (dispersed in water) (36.000 kg); -tap water (13.500 kg); -a plasticising agent such as chloraparaffin 521 (6.000 kg); -a pigment, for example a white pigment such as titanium dioxide R003 (6.000 kg); -a defoaming agent such as a parafinic liquid/mineral oil, for example Octafoam (0.600 kg); -a biocide, for example, acticide CH9636 (0.250 kg); -a phosphate, dispersing agent to disperse the exolate surfactant, for example surfac K18 (0.300 kg); 0226243 05-Jan-07 05:54 I -methyl ethyl glycol (MEG) (0.300 kg); -a dispersing agent to disperse the pigment, such as a carboxylate in aqueous solution, for example eccodis 80 (0.360 kg); -tap water (7.000 kg) -an acrylic associative thickener, for example Rheovis 132, In liquid form) (2.300 kg); -a vinyl acetate dispersion/vovea copolymer, for example emultex 523 (15.000 kg).</p><p>0226243 05-Jan-07 05:54</p>
