Abstract
346,774. Electrolytic furnaces. CARPMAEL, A., 24, Southampton Buildings, London.-(1. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. ; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany.) Jan. 9, 1930, Nos. 864 and 16357. [Class 39 (iii).] In a furnace for the manufacture of fluorine by electrolysis of fused acid fluorides of the alkali metals including those containing more than one molecular proportion of hydrogen fluoride, the solid electrolyte itself is employed as jointing and insulating material for the electrodes. In the apparatus shown, the electrodes 3 are introduced through depending extensions of the limbs of a U-shaped vessel 1, the ends being closed by plates 6 of copper or magnesium or of an insulator such as asbestos slate. The limbs are filled with dry acid fluoride of an alkali metal and the last traces of moisture are removed bv a current of hot air. The fluoride is melted and then caused to solidify at the joints by cooling tubes. The plates 6, if of metal, are then removed and the ends dipped in liquid paraffin wax. Anhydrous hydrofluoric acid is introduced during electrolysis at 4. Any acid passing over with the gases is condensed by cooling tubes 2. In a modification, the cell is of prismatic or cylindrical form, the electrodes are introduced at the top through cup-shaped sealing members containing electrolyte material, and a diaphragm allowing passage of electrolyte but not of gases is provided. The electrodes may also be introduced from the sides of the cell.
