Abstract

<PICT:0361690/III/1> p Solvents used in dry-cleaning are regenerated by treating with a decolorizing agent separating the heavier impurities by centrifuging, and distilling the purified solvent to remove dissolved impurities. Used solvent such as benzol, a solution of soap in petrol, or chlorinated hydrocarbons, is forced by a pump 3 from a washer 1 through pipes 2, 4 into the conical base of a vessel 6 containing an alkaline solution preferably mixed with activated carbon. The solvent rises and passes through a pipe 7, which may have a draw-off device consisting of a pipe and float, to a centrifuge 8 and returns through a pipe 16 to the washer. Before centrifugal treatment, the solvent may be mixed with water admitted through a pipe 15. A part of the decolorized solvent is byepassed through a pipe 10 to a still 11, and the vapours evolved pass to a condenser 12, and the condensate is forced by a pump 14 to the vessel 6. The washer 1 may be provided with a sump tank to contain charges of solvent. The decolorizing vessel may be of the type described in Specification 238,185, [Class 91, Oils &c.]. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of a filter to replace the centrifuge. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
