[Classes 19 and 61 (i).] A toothbrush comprises two spring-supported parts carrying bristles and capable of independently oscillating in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the brush handle, the parts being mounted on a rod which carries the spring and extends longitudinally beyond one end of the handle. In the construction shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5, two plates 7 carrying bristles 7<a> are connected by screws 5 to a resilient blade 4 which is fixed in a rod 8. The rod fits in a recess in a handle 1 and is held in place by means of a button 10 which is adapted to slide in a hole in the handle and is provided with a cross-piece 11 for engagement in a groove 12 formed in the rod 8. The brushes are replaceable by brushes mounted on the concave side of a similar resilient blade. In a modification shown in Figs. 6 and 8, brushes 17, 18 are hinged together about an axis 16 on the end of a rod 15 which is detachably secured to the handle 1. A blade-spring 20 fixed on the axis 16 engages in recesses formed on the brush stocks. The brush 18 is formed with a groove 23 in which a U-shaped member 24 is slidably mounted, the member being adapted to straddle the end of the axis 16. The blade 20 is slightly curved so that the brushes 17, 18 form together a convex brush, which is replaceable by a concave brush with a blade shaped correspondingly. A single flat blade spring may be used with one pair of brushes 17, 18 which by pressure on the blade spring may be caused to conform to the interior or exterior curvature of the jaw.
