[Class 130] A machine for making filter-tip cigarettes comprises a paper tube maker and cutter, a filter wad making and inserting unit, and means for inserting wads into the ends of paper tubes and conveying the tubes with their wads to filling devices which insert tobacco into the tubes, the wad making unit cutting sections from a web of crepe paper &c. and forming them into cylindrical wads which are inserted into holes in a disc rotated to feed them to the paper tubes and the tubes and wads being conveyed to a reservoir from which they are removed one by one for filling. Paper from a reel 2 passes through printing, colouring or bronzing devices 4 and over an edge paster or crimper 5 to a former 6, the resulting continuous tube being sealed by a roller 7 which co-operates with a roller inside the tube, supported by a weighted arm 8. Lengths of the tube are cut by camactuated scissors 11 and are each received by a hollow spoon which carries it to a flute in an intermittently rotating drum 16. Crepe paper 20 for the filter wads passes from a reel 18 and guide 21 to feed wheels 22, 23, a length being cut off between the wheels by scissors 24. The cut length is compressed between the concave end faces of a member 25 and a cam-actuated pusher 26 to form a cylindrical wad, which is ejected by a cam-actuated push-rod into one of the holes in a disc 33 intermittently driven by a worm. In the uppermost position, the wads are ejected one at a time by a camactuated rod 36 into a tube or spoon 37 carried by a cam-actuated rod 38. The spoon 37 carries the wad to a paper tube in a flute of the drum 16, the tube and wad being retained in the flute by a stripper pawl 39. After rotation of the drum, the tube and wad fall upon a band 40 conveying the tubes to a tobacco filling device. Tobacco from a hopper 41 is showered on a tape 43 and formed by compressing wheels into a rod which enters a slotted spoon 51. A rotary cutter severs the tobacco in the spoon, a paper tube is slid over the spoon by a camactuated rod 52, and a stripper arm 57 moving in a slot in the spoon returns the completed cigarette to the fluted drum, from which it eventually falls on a delivery band 57. True alignment of the paper tubes on the drum 47 may be ensured by a reciprocating platform 61, or the conveyer band 40 may deliver the tubes to a hopper having means for transferring the tubes one at a time to the drum 47. The output of the tube-making mechanism may exceed slightly that of the tobacco-filling mechanism, means being provided for reducing it when the supply of tubes accumulates.
