Abstract

567,924. Envelopes. DAVIES, H. V. Aug. 4, 1943, Nos. 12617/43, 2823/44 and 12233/44. [Class 146 (ii)] In a continuous envelope assembly, in which the envelope openings are transverse to the length of the strip, the sealing-flap of each envelope is integral with the front or back of the preceding envelope, and the series is provided with side marginal feeder-bands for engagement by a feeding- device of the pin type, such as that described in Specification 408,125, [Group XVI]. In one arrangement, the series is formed from a single continuous strip, which is doubled on itself at intervals to provide the envelope pockets. Each envelope consists of a flap portion 11, Fig. 1, a front 12, and a back 13. The back is formed with side-wings 14 and is doubled on to the front and gummed thereto by means of the inturned wings. The front portions are each formed with perforated extensions 18, which, after the folding, form continuous feeder-bands. In another form, the assembly is built up from a. series of blanks, each comprising the back 22, Fig. 3, of one envelope and the flap 23 and front 24 of the next. The back portion of each blank is superimposed on the front of the preceding blank, which is adhesively secured thereto by means of foldable margins 25, 26. The web may be reversely folded about the lines 29, 30, so that the envelopes are staggered. The marginal feeder-bands may be in the form of separate continuous strips 31, Fig. 5, which are sandwiched between the superposed side-edges of the back and front portions of the blanks. The back 22 of one envelope may be separated from the flap 23 of the next by a narrow strip 33, which is doubled back and gummed to the base of the preceding envelope to serve as a reinforcement therefor. In another form, a single strip forms the fronts and flaps of consecutive envelopes, and separate blanks having inturned side and base wings are attached thereto to form the backs. The continuous strip is extended laterally to form the feederbands.
