Abstract

585,794. Projectiles. BURNEY, SIR C. D. July 30, 1942, No. 10667. [Class 9 (i)] A subcalibre projectile has a driving collar 2 at the medial point of its length adapted to disintegrate under centrifugal force after the projectile has left the muzzle of the gun and another member 6 at its rear end for guiding and centralising and which permits free access of the chamber gases to the driving collar. The collar members may be screwed to the projectile body or provided with interfitting ribs and recesses 28 and to facilitate disintegration the medial driving collar may be formed in detachable segments enclosed by a thin tapered driving ring and sleeve 3 having an interfitting rib 9 with the projectile body, so that chamber gas-pressure thereon tends to press the sleeve on to the segments and prevents the access of gas to the screw-thread or rib attachment. The rear member 4 is also formed in sections perforated at 5 to allow free passage of the pressure gases to the space behind the driving member and the segments are surrounded by a band 6. The rear fitting may take the form of a helical vaned member or a weakened ring with projections 19, Fig. 11, tipped with copper 22. The driving member 2 may be provided with a separate ring 25 and conical sleeve 26 which covers the entrance to the joint between the driving member and the body of the projectile or a separate ring with coned surface secured to the body by wedges. The rear of the projectile may be of streamlined form and may be perforated to balance the pressures within and without. The driving band 3 may be positioned upon the rear guiding device of the projectile instead of upon the forward driving collar in which case the forward driving collar is fitted with a gas-check ring of soft metal such as lead.
