Abstract

626,779. Torque - transmitting couplings. LOYNES, A. H. W. April 21, 1947, No. 10629. [Class 80 (ii)] A quick-release coupling, forming a drive connection between a shaft 10, driving an auxiliary gear-box, and a sleeved joint-member 17. connecting the shaft to a driving engine, comprises balls 21, carried in radial holes in the joint-member and held in locking engagement with recesses or a peripheral groove in the shaft by a tapered internal recess in a spring- loaded surrounding lock-sleeve 22, torque being transmitted by interfitting splines 14 on the jointmember and shaft. Sliding the lock-sleeve 22 axially against a stop-peg releases the balls 21 which remain captive between the spherical bases of the holes and an enlarged part 23b of the recess in the lock-sleeve. The shaft 10 can then be withdrawn axially out of the joint-member 17. The gear-box end of the shaft 10 has a simple splined fit in the gear-box joint-member.
