Abstract

641,639. Cutting apparatus. KODAK, Ltd. July 29, 1948, No. 20282. [Class 31 (i)] A machine for forming notches, at predetermined intervals, in a roll of backing paper for photographic roll films, comprises supply and take-up spindles for a roll of backing paper, a punching station where marginal notches are stamped out of the backing paper by a punching tool to define the leading and trailing ends of each spool length of film backing paper, means actuated by the return movement of the tool for operating a drive means-for the take-up spindle to wind the notched backing paper on to the take-up roll, and means under the control of the notches formed in said paper for stopping the drive means when the required length of paper has been wound. As shown in Fig. 3, paper 4 carried on a supply roll 5 is led to a punching station 8, where marginal notches are punched out by a tool comprising trapezoidal plates 25 mounted on a casting 26, Fig. 5, the paper then passing to a labelling station 9, Fig. 3, and around a system of tensioning rollers, not shown, to a take-up roll 16. The roll 16 is driven by an electric motor which is energized through a switch 63 actuated by the return movement of the punching tool and is de-energized by a switch 73 operated by an arm 72 which normally rides on the surface of the paper 4 but drops down and operates the switch when a cut-out portion of the paper arrives at this point. Adhesive labels 40 in strip form are fed from a drum 41 round a roller 44 and along a guide 45, Fig. 4, which overlaps the strip of paper 4. Downward movement of the casting 26 causes the end label 40b to be pressed on to the paper 4 by pad 57, and severed by a pivoted-blade cutter 54, the next label 40c being pressed by pad 58 on to a moistened wick 51. The label strip is fed by a claw 49, Fig. 4, which engages slots 47a in the strip and is carried on a carriage 48 having a pin-and-slot connection with a lever 66 actuated by a solenoid which operates when the motor is started.
