Abstract

674,532. Cooling exhaust; engine construction. COOPER-BESSEMER CORPORATION. March 7, 1950, No. 5711/50. Class 7(ii) In an engine having adjacent rows of water-cooled cylinders 1, Fig. 1. the space between the rows forms an exhaust cooling chamber 6 receiving the exhaust gases directly from cylinder exhaust ports 8 and having side wall portions formed by portions 7 of the walls of the cylinder cooling jackets, while , intake ports 8a open directly through the portions of the jacket walls opposite to the portions 7. As shown, spaces between the portions 7 are filled in by cylinder webs 16, Fig. 6, sealed together by strips 18, a top cover 10 overlying the space between the cylinder rows and end walls 9, Fig. 5, closing the spaces at the end of the rows. As applied to a two-stroke diesel gas V- engine with scavenging air ports 8a, the cylinders are mounted upon a frame 2 also forming a crank chamber, and each has upper and lower rectangular frame members 14, 15, Fig. 3, between which the webs 16 run; The strips 18 are held down by bolts 20, 21 screwing thereon, and locate at their upper and lower ends in a rail 19 and a central frame member 13 respectively. Plates X underlying the heads of the bolts 20 extend along the outer faces of the cylinder rows. The end walls 9 are bolted to cylinder bank end covers 22 and to the top cover 10, which seats on the rails 19. A baffle plate 12 deflects the exhaust gases upwards towards an outlet pipe 11 in the cover 10, and prevents) interference between opposed ports 8. The cover 10 is hollow and cooling water from the cylinder iackets is circulated therethrough via pipes lOb.
