Abstract
687,088. Cables. GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. Nov. 13, 1951 [Nov. 14, 1950], No. 27748/50. Class 36. A machine for making a cable consisting of a conductor enclosed in a metal tube and insulated from it by a powder, for example magnesia or talc, comprises a ram 1 which works in a cylinder 2 and a member 4 having a conical part 7, a cylindrical part 8 and a tapering part 9. The ram has an axial passage through which the conductor 12 can be drawn. The enclosing metal tube is made from a metal strip 21 drawn from a bobbin 22. The strip first passes over a tension device 23 and a roller 24 and is then shaped by partial bending in a device 25. It then enters a space 6 between the part 7 and an outer member 5 which cause the edges of the strip to approach one another. Before the strip is completely closed it passes below an opening 11 leading to a hopper 13 containing the filling powder a certain quantity of which falls through the gap between the edges of the strip. The ram in its forward movement closes the opening 11 and compresses the powder round the conductor 12. The edges of the strip are finally brought together as it passes between the tapering part 9 and a member 14, the edges being soldered or otherwise joined by a device 15. The conductor, tube, and filling are drawn by a device 17 through a die 16 to reduce the diameter. The ram is reciprocated by a double acting piston and cylinder device 27. According to the Provisional Specification the ram is moved by an arm projecting through the gap between the edges of the strip and connected to a motor through a spring coupling. In addition to its normal reciprocation the ram may be given a small rapid reciprocation by inserting a pneumatic hammer between the motor and the ram.
