Abstract

694,230. Rotary swivels. NATIONAL SUPPLY CO., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Oct. 1, 1951 [Jan. 26, 1951], No. 22833/51. Class 85 [Also in Group XXVIII] In a rotary swivel, the wash pipe connecting the misaligned bores of the fixed and rotating members is so non-rotatably mounted in respect of either of said members that it may tilt and gyrate with either or both of said members to accommodate misalignment. In one embodiment, the exterior of the upper end of the washpipe 22 has formed therein spline teeth 25 which loosely engage with corresponding teeth 27 on an annular ring 28 positioned in a packing box 30 secured to the non-rotary member 15 of the swivel. The clearances between the two sets of teeth 25, 27 are such that the end of the wash pipe can move axially a shorter distance and also tilt and gyrate with respect to the non- rotary member. The lower end of the wash pipe passes into a stuffing box secured to the rotary member and said end may also be provided with externally positioned teeth 26 to permit reversal of the wash pipe when the upper set become worn. In a second embodiment the arrangement is reversed and it is the upper end of the wash pipe which passes into a stuffing box connected to the non-rotary member by a resilient mounting.
