Abstract

Flakes of a thickness between 0,5-1,5 mm. particularly for feeding chickens and other fowls are formed from a powdered feed mixture consisting of 10-96 per cent vegetable and 1-50 per cent animal feed products, 0,2-15 per cent mineral substances, about 0,01-3 per cent of vitamins, antibiotics, trace elements, and substances forming a binding agent with water or steam, and 1-25 per cent crude fibre e.g. the fibre of barley or oats grits, fine wheat bran or lucerne meal, by treating the mixture with steam or water and pressing the resulting plastic mass to flakes. If desired, only the binding agent is treated with steam or water, after which the other constituents are incorporated; the powdered main feed may be separately treated with steam e.g. to a temperature below 70 DEG C., prior to mixing in the water preparation of the binding agent. The binding agent may be prepared from linseed cake, with or without cereal meal, skim milk or skimmed milk powder, boiled mashed potato or animal glue. The water or steam treatment may be effected in a continuously-operating screw conveyer and the moist mixture may be extruded through holes as strings which are cut to a suitable length, pressed to flakes and dried.
