Abstract
A plastic composition, particularly for use as a putty for sealing cracks in structures providing protection against radioactive emanations, comprises fine metal particles agglomerated together and joined into aggregates by minute welds between portions of the particle surfaces and having a density of substantially 70 to 95 per cent of the average density of the particles. The material may be formed as a rod having a core of compacted metal powder and sheathing formed by further compacting the outer metal particles. The metal powder may be agglomerated by extrusion, grinding, or beating. Compositions containing zinc, lead, tin, or cadmium powder are extruded at room temperatures, whilst those containing aluminium, magnesium, copper, silver, or gold are extruded at the temperatures of recrystallization of the metals. Mixtures of soft and hard metal powders, e.g. of lead and tungsten, may be included in the compositions. The composition may include a minor proportion of a soft binding material such as oil or grease, e.g. it may comprise 15 per cent by weight of a mineral oil grease and 85 per cent of lead powder, or 10 per cent of a liquid metallic silicone and 90 per cent lead powder.
