Abstract

923,013. Piston and stuffing-box packing. DOWTY SEALS Ltd. Feb. 1, 1962 [Jan. 30, 1961], No. 3464/61. Addition to 797,684. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). In a sealing arrangement between two relatively movable cylindrical members and comprising a packing ring 12 of elastomeric material located in an annular recess 3 in one of the members, extrusion of the packing ring into the clearance 6 between the two members is prevented by an unsplit supporting ring 8 of triangular cross-section made of an elastomeric material harder than that of the packing ring, the ring 8 having two perpendicular sides 9 and 10 bearing against an end wall 4 of the recess and the cylindrical surface 5 of the other member respectively. The packing ring 12 and the supporting ring 8 may be of natural or synthetic rubber and nylon, respectively. In a modification, the packing ring is of circular cross-section.
